The field was narrowed to 10 tonight, as America’s votes were revealed and the Instant Save gave a contestant one more chance.
Nick Jonas
Remember when Nick Jonas was just the youngest of the JoBros, with the floppiest hair? Now he’s all grown up and handsome, singing like a grown up. In the beginning, it sounded like he was copping out of some of his high notes, but as it turns out, he was just holding back and saving it all for the end of the song. He brought out some great falsetto, and an overall vocal maturity that shows the youngest Jonas has grown up a lot. Now, when do we see the triumphant return of Joe Jonas?
Team Performances
Team Blake
You may not have known you wanted to hear Blake Shelton sing Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” until you heard it, but it was absolutely perfect. That tall country boy’s got some soul, and it was great to hear that awesome voice sing something other than country. Blake joined his team members, Corey Kent White, Hannah Kirby, and Meghan Linsey, for the performance, and despite a little hiccup when someone (probably Blake) forgot it was their turn to sing, it was a great, fun performance.
Team Christina
Team Christina is made up of a bunch of powerhouses, and joined by Queen Christina herself, they brought a flood a talent to the desert with The Eagles classic “Hotel California.” It was the perfect change of pace for these powerful rock and R&B powerhouses to take on a classic rock tune, but it sounded so good. Living out the rest of your days at the Hotel California doesn’t seem too bad, as long as you get to spend it with Team Christina.
The Results
Carson revealed the saved contestants bit by bit throughout the show, and in the end, we were left with the bottom three: Mia Z, Brian Johnson, and Deanna Johnson. This was bad news for Mia’s coach, Pharrell, and even worse news for Adam, who was Brian’s and Deanna’s coach. Pharrell and Adam lobbied for their contestants the best that they could, but in the end, only one could get the save.
Last Chance Performances
Mia Z
There is no one else like Mia Z in the competition, and her last chance performance of “Stormy Monday” by T Bone Walker allowed her to show off what she does best: the blues. And it’s a good thing she injected a lot of feeling and soul into the song, because you could understand not a single word of what she sang. Just because you’ve got the blues, Mia, doesn’t mean we don’t wanna hear what you’re saying.
Brian Johnson
Brian has one of those classically excellent voices that would fit right in on the radio in the ‘80s, ‘90s, or today. It’s just plain good, and pleasant for the ears. He chose Lonestar’s “Amazed” for his last chance performance, which is…sigh…one of the most over-performed songs in the history of reality competition television. But hey, he sounded great singing it. And he had a great hat/cardigan combination, for what it’s worth.
Deanna Johnson
Deanna Johnson broke away from the religious kick that has worked for her the past few weeks, and performed Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain.” She has a beautiful voice, and it was a beautiful performance, but it just seemed to be lacking a certain oomph. But she has certainly come a long way in overcoming her stage fright.
Instant Save
After the last chance performances, the Instant Save window was opened, allowing America five minutes to tweet their votes for who they wanted to save. The Instant Save is usually not very suspenseful, because the votes are shown onscreen throughout the commercial break, and there’s usually a clear leader. But Brian and Deanna were locked at 35 percent each for much of the voting window, so it could really go either way. But in the end, Carson revealed that America had used the Instant Save to save Deanna Johnson, who looked completely shocked.
The Voice top 10 perform next Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC, with the results of America’s vote revealed Tuesday at 8 p.m.
