Adam Levine took the stage for a blind audition of his own on night three of The Voice season 8’s blind auditions. Spoiler alert: He’s got quite a career ahead of him.
Adam’s audition
Proving that everyone gets nervous auditioning for The Voice, the Grammy-winning coach took the stage for a blind audition of his own. After jokingly mumbling into his microphone that he was “terrified,” Adam brought the house down with his performance of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.” Anyone who’s ever seen a Maroon 5 show knows that Adam can rock just about any cover, and this was no exception.
All of his fellow coaches turned their chairs, even Blake, though he did so begrudgingly. Pharrell helped turn Adam’s chair, for full effect, therefore proving that Adam Levine is forever the King of the Four-Chair Turn, no matter which side of those chairs he is on.
Standout auditions
So there were actually a lot of unknown artists who auditioned as well. These were some of the standouts:
Michael Leier
Michael Leier may be from Fargo, ND, but he’s far from that grating “you betcha” stereotype. He formed a band with his friends in high school, but when they all went their separate ways after graduation, Michael found himself feeling unfulfilled as a pre-med student. He decided to take a chance and audition for The Voice, and his performance of Pearl Jam’s cover of “Last Kiss” earned chair turns from Adam and Blake. Michael’s deep voice was reminiscent of Eddie Vedder’s, which made his performance an easy sell for Pearl Jam fan Adam. Blake tried his best, but Michael obviously felt a connection with Adam, and chose to join his team.
Travis Ewing
We’re pretty sure performing a slow-jam version of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” should give you an automatic in on any competition show, but if that’s not already the case, it definitely should be. One-man-band Travis Ewing blew the coaches away with his unique arrangement of the late-‘90s hit. Christina turned her chair right away, with Blake and Pharrell waiting it out until the very end. Travis’ voice and style brings to mind last season’s Ricky Manning, and maybe that’s why he also chose to join Team Pharrell.
Sonic
The first thing you should know about 23-year-old Sonic is that she is not, in fact, a hedgehog. The second thing you should know is that she is really talented. She once had a record deal that never panned out, so while she has been gigging around with her rock band ever since, she has also taken up designing some pretty intense jewelry. She sang Sam Smith’s “Money on My Mind,” and totally nailed the difficult octave transition in the chorus. Adam and Christina turned their chairs, and Sonic bonded with her girl Christina, and chose her team.
India Carney
India Carney is a promising student at UCLA’s exclusive music school, but doesn’t really have any set plans after graduation. The Brooklyn native brought the whole crowd to her hometown with a show-stopping rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” All four coaches turned their chairs, and India seemed so delighted, she let out a little laugh, mid-song. Christina called her a “vocal beast,” (which is high praise from the Vocal Beast herself), and Pharrell tried some fancy wordplay to talk India onto his team (“Four chairs, four points, Four-rell.”) In the end, India chose the artist that has been a personal influence of hers for years: Christina Aguilera.
Stay tuned for night four of the blind auditions, airing Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
