The Vampire Diaries is now several episodes into its seventh season, and with us learning more and more about what the future holds we have to ask: Is this the last season?
Initially when Nina Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries we all assumed that this would be the show’s last season, despite creator Julie Plec and her team being adamant that that’s not the necessarily case. The truth is, even Plec didn’t know if this was going to be the last season — it was too early! The show had just ended its sixth season and everyone was wondering what Elena’s disappearance would mean for the show — so while we were hopeful for the show to continue, everyone just assumed it was going to end.
But now, several episodes in, it seems like Plec and company are hinting that this could indeed be the very end of the show we’ve grown to love so much.
We’re not just saying that simply because of Elena’s absence — the show has clearly shown us they can do just fine without the main character. The real reason we think the end is near is the one aspect that makes this season so awesome: The flash-forwards.
The flash-forwards have given us so many glimpses into the future of our favorite characters, so much so that their lives seem to be very different in the small time jump. Caroline is apparently the head of a news station and she’s engaged, and Damon had apparently decided to desiccate himself until Elena woke up. At the very least we know that this show will likely not last three more seasons because then they’re just going to be repeating themselves at that point!
Other than giving us an interesting way to tell the story, why would Plec choose now to show us our characters’ futures? The only reason we can think of is because we won’t be seeing a future after this season. We imagine the season ending in a way that leads to a happy futuristic flash-forward alongside characters who are ready to get there in the present day.
But perhaps there’s something that Bonnie or another witch can do that will completely undo the future we’ve seen, leaving the next year (or three) up to Plec to make up. We can’t imagine that very many fans are happy with the idea of Caroline being engaged to Tyler instead of Stefan, and Damon desiccating himself just doesn’t seem like something he would do — not the way we know him. While we think the season is headed towards a series finale, we also all know anything is possible in Mystic Falls.
