With the Kai situation basically dealt with, The Vampire Diaries finally caught up with Bonnie and her unfortunate situation in 1994.
An Almost Suicide
Bonnie is still stuck in 1994, and she’s starting to give up. It’s her birthday, and she’s realized how long she’s been there and no longer wants to be alive anymore.
Meanwhile in Mystic Falls, her friends wants to celebrate Bonnie’s birthday anyway. Elena is determined to celebrate the day with cupcakes and balloons but Jeremy doesn’t like the idea, so he decides to not take part. But then Kai shows up while Damon and Elena are setting up and says that he needs their help, because he’s finally started to feel remorse for all his bad actions.
Since Kai merged with Luke he also got Luke’s ability to empathize and actually feel things, so Kai has been feeling really horrible about what he did. He wrote a letter to Jo and wants Damon and Elena to give it to her since he’s moving back to Portland, but in return Elena asks that he do something for them: Get them over to the prison he was trapped in so they can save Bonnie. But there’s a catch – Kai can send them over but Bonnie won’t be able to see anything, and they’ll have to figure out a way to make her realize there’s another way out.
What’s the way out? It’s in Nova Scotia. Silas’ tombstone has Qetsiyah’s blood on it, which has just enough magic that Bonnie might be able to siphon and use to get out of her prison.
Meanwhile, Liv is mourning the loss of her brother and comes up with a plan to kill Kai. She’s not thinking rationally, though, because as Tyler points out to her if she kills Kai then her entire coven will die since he’s their leader. Tyler tries to stop her from finding Kai but she deceives him and puts him to sleep with a spell.
So Kai tries to help Elena and Damon, and Jeremy (who just found out about the plan) and send them over but they can’t touch anything and Bonnie can’t hear them. They see Bonnie open the oldest bottle of bourbon in the house and Damon explains that they made a pact – if they can’t take it anymore they’d finish that bottle and then kill themselves.
Suddenly they’re back in modern day because the spell is too much for Kai to hold for too long. They decide to send Jeremy over there since Kai could be strong enough to do the spell with only one person, and he ends up getting to touch the atlas that Damon had marked Nova Scotia on.
Unfortunately for everyone, Liv shows up to the Salvatore house and stabs Kai before he’s able to help Jeremy show Bonnie the map. She knocks Jeremy out and traps Damon and Elena in a room upstairs, but Kai is able to get the upper hand pretty quickly and attempts to kill her but realizes he can’t. His morals are back and he can’t kill anyone anymore, thanks to the merge, so Liv uses this to her advantage and stabs him again.
Jeremy wakes up and brings Kai to the kitchen and demands he help him save Bonnie, so Kai sends Jeremy back to 1994 in time to see Bonnie completely give up and enter the garage to kill herself. She turns on the car and closes the garage door, but then she remembers her grams told her to stay strong – it was just the reminder she needed. She tries to get up and open the door but she’s too weak, and Jeremy is able to open the garage door so she lives another day.
Damon and Elena manage to incapacitate Liv enough to make sure Jeremy and Kai are okay, and Bonnie finds the marked Nova Scotia page, realizes what it means and immediately packs up and drives away from Mystic Falls.
In the end, Jeremy admits to Elena that he will finally apply to art school like she wanted him to all along and Tyler leaves Liv because of her deception.
Revenge
Enzo took Matt to visit Sarah Salvatore, and wants Matt to get close to Sarah so she can find out more about her. He uses Matt’s mother against him, saying he’s going to kill her if Matt doesn’t do what he says.
So he approaches Sarah and asks her about her camera to pique her interest but it doesn’t really work, and she walks away. Enzo then asks for Matt’s jacket, wallet and cellphone and gets Matt to trick Sarah into thinking he’s been ditched. Being the good samaritan that she is, Sarah sees Matt waiting as a campus bus stop and Matt explains the situation. Sarah offers to buy him a bus ticket home and agrees to get him coffee as well, showing Matt that she’s actually a good person.
After they bond, Matt goes back to Enzo and explains how Sarah was a good person, and Enzo decides that he wants to make her a bad girl. Enzo plans on insinuating himself into her life and make her beg him to become a vampire.
Looking for Miss Cuddles
Preparing for the party, Caroline gets creeped out by Miss Cuddles and tells Stefan about how she hid the original Miss Cuddles in the woods when she was a kid and never found it. Since she’s a control freak and she has no control over her mother’s cancer or Bonnie being trapped, she decides to go looking for the original Miss Cuddles in the woods.
Stefan joins her as she digs but instead of helping he just drinks, watching her try an impossible task. They bond over how impossible their task is and drink a ton before they actually manage to find Miss Cuddles. The entire day was them bonding and tugging our Steroline heartstrings.
