The Vampire Diaries premiered its sixth season tonight, and it was definitely worth the wait. Check out our recaps and let us know what you thought!
Catching Up
It starts like any horror story does, really: A couple camping in the woods; only instead of a vampire it’s the sheriff that comes to stop the fun. But on their way out, and once they were outside the limits of Mystic Falls, a vampire comes to get ’em.
Elena narrates the intro and says she’s decided to major in medicine to become a doctor, she’s in her sophomore year now, four months later. Matt is now working on self-defense and training to be a volunteer for the police department. Stefan and Elena haven’t spoken in the months that passed, he’s working on cars instead. And Caroline is living in her own apartment outside of Mystic Falls, since she dropped out of college. But Elena wants her to come to the football game the next day, and so does Tyler.
Caroline is the one trying to figure out how to get rid of the spell keeping them away from Mystic Falls, and explains that Elena has barely even cried for Damon and is living in a world of denial.
But during all of the intro, Elena is mixing some sort of potion – a hallucinogen that allows her to “dream” up Damon.
Off Their Game
Elena has been working with Luke to get his hallucinogens, and she says she’s been extra thirsty because of it. She wants another batch, but he doesn’t want to give it to her – she tells him to come to her place by five anyway. He doesn’t show, and Elena arrives at his dorm instead. They end up getting into an argument, and she pushes him against a wall to convince him to make more of the potion. She’s desperate, and she’s not asking.
Alaric and Caroline meet up at a diner to talk about spells, and she brings up Stefan. It’s bothering her that Stefan never said goodbye, and he just disappeared, but Alaric points out that maybe he just doesn’t want to bother Caroline with his problems. She doesn’t really buy it.
Meanwhile, Jeremy is all caught up in video games, girls and drinking. Matt tries talking him into getting back into the game and helping protect the town, but Jeremy is convinced the town is safe because there’s no magic, and without magic he’s not a hunter so he can’t do anything anyway, so he’s done.
Slow Vampires
Stefan is busy with the mechanic shop and his new girl, Abbie. They’ve been hanging for two months and she doesn’t know anything about him, and it’s clear that Stefan is keeping his distance. She’s totally his rebound girl, and we don’t predict this relationship lasting long at all.
Tyler shows up at the tailgate party and bumps into Alaric, who thinks he shouldn’t be drinking this close to a full moon. Alaric doesn’t want Tyler to trigger his werewolf curse all over again.
On her way back to Mystic Falls Elena finds a girl stranded on the side of the road and starts feeding, but Caroline shows up and the girl ends up getting away into the boundaries of Mystic Falls before either of them can wipe her memory.
Giving Up
Elena ends up telling Caroline about the drugs she’s been taking to see Damon, and Caroline tries to talk Elena into getting through Damon’s death differently. She points out she’s not getting through it, and just pressing pause, which is so deep for The Vampire Diaries.
The girl Elena bit ends up all the way into the middle of the town before anyone gets to her, but luckily Matt gets to her first. Unfortunately for him, Trip, the volunteer program’s leader is more concerned to get the real story out of her. Sheriff Forbes comes to save the day, though, and so begins the season long drama between Forbes and Trip.
Stefan is avoiding Elena’s calls, but ring three times and you got yourself a Ripper! She needs to hear something positive from Stefan, she’s hoping to bring Damon back and she needs Stefan’s opinion on how he’s getting through the loss. But then Stefan tells her it’s pointless to keep trying, and he’s said goodbye to Damon. He’s gone. Brother out.
Werewolf Urges
Caroline calls Tyler at the football game and updates him on Elena’s status and how Luke has been helping her, so now he gets all angry teenage werewolf boy at Luke in the middle of the crowd, but luckily Alaric is there to break things up.
Matt takes the girl (named Sarah) out of the boundaries of Mystic Falls, and talks to her about how he’s been through the same thing but she doesn’t trust him. Then Caroline shows up to wipe her memory, and all is good – at least on that front.
Elena is back at the old family crypt drinking the drug potion, but it’s the final time, so she’s saying thank you to Damon (…or herself?) as well as goodbye. Just when she thought she said goodbye, the hallucination won’t go away, and she starts going insane and starts crying. You know, like Elena does.
Vampire Pancakes
Liv confronts Tyler about his actions at the party, and she wants him to lay off. And Tyler actually apologizes, but Liv tells him to tell Tyler instead. Tyler admits he’s still having troubles being human again, and he’s trying to deal with it.
Caroline has been leaving Stefan voicemails explaining what’s going on, because he never answers. She’s just sitting at a diner looking through books to get a way back into Mystic Falls, and she decides she’s never going to stop calling Stefan, as Caroline does. But Stefan crushes his phone, so he’s totally done.
In a heart-to-heart with Alaric, Elena asks him to compel her. Because he’s an Original vampire he can compel other vampires, and she wants him to make her forget she ever loved Damon. Noooo!
And the last scene is, of course, Bonnie and Damon. Except, there’s not in an abyss of white light, nor are they in Mystic Falls (or so it seems). Damon is making pancakes and Bonnie is making coffee in some cabin, where they’ve apparently been every day for a while. Whut?
