After the crazy final twist in last week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries season 5, we were all anxious to find out what happened to Katherine in the last moments of “Monster’s Ball,” and we definitely got some answers in “Handle with Care!”
- It all begins with Katherine ordering up a monster-sized breakfast in celebration of her survival, only to find that her hair may not have faired so well. It’s graying.
- Damon and Elena snuggling on the couch. Awwww. It’s nice to see them doing some semi-normal couple-y things.
- Silas ruins their blissful moment to discuss their plans for his death and lay down some awesome one-liners.
- Stefan wakes up on Tessa’s couch after a Tequila-night-in commiserating with the centuries old spellcaster only to find out that the Mystic Falls Scooby gang texted him after he fell asleep. Tessa is happy to share that she invaded his privacy to learn that Silas is now mortal, and she plans to change his breathing status as soon as she can.
- Elena is having trouble trusting Silas’ word that he will bring Bonnie back before he departs the mortal world for good, so he snarkily offers to pinky swear. Yeah, that’ll do the trick.
- Everyone is looking for the anchor now. Silas wants to die and find peace. Tessa wants to keep him from ever having peace again. The Mystic Falls Scooby gang just wants Bonnie back before Tessa or Silas get their way.
- The anchor is in NEW JERSEY? What is this plot twist?
- The Travelers want to keep Silas from Amara, therefore keeping the veil right where it is.
- Tessa thinks she has considered every variable, only to find out that she is spelled into the cabin until sundown courtesy of Silas, and with a spell she taught him no less. Guess she missed something.
- Katherine is crashing at Whitmore with Caroline, and will be helping teach her a crash course of Villain 101 so Caroline and Elena won’t have to drop out to avoid death.
- While we are supposed to hate Silas on principle for making the lives of all of our favorites a living hell, he is also really funny when he is snarky and sarcastic all the time.
- Tessa invites Elena into the cabin, and now she can’t leave, due to Silas’ curse.
- Damon, Silas, and Jeremy take a road trip to New Jersey only to end up at a huge warehouse full of junk that holds the anchor, so they begin the search through the proverbial haystack for the proverbial needle.
- Back at Whitmore College, Katherine and Caroline are draining Professor Maxwell of his vervain-filled blood so they can compel him to forget that Elena and Caroline are vampires.
- Next we get to see the sneak peek scene of Bonnie and Jeremy trying to convince each other that the power of positivity will be enough to convince the fates that Bonnie needs to be resurrected. Let’s hope it works!
- The Travelers are mad at Silas for creating the immortality spell, therefore they are trying to keep Silas from, well, whatever he wants, also known as Amara.
- Tessa lures Elena to the cabin in order to use her as leverage against Damon. She wants Damon to kill Silas before the sun sets, or she will kill Elena.
- Katherine shows up to the secret group meeting at Whitmore College, proving that “Elena” isn’t a vampire because she could walk right across the threshold without an invitation.
- Katherine begins stuffing her face with, well, whatever she can find at the party, having already thrown the crazies off Elena’s trail.
- Katherine’s hair isn’t the only thing changing, as she is standing talking to Professor Maxfield’s ward, Aaron, her tooth falls out. What is happening to Katherine?!
- Meanwhile, back at the cabin, Tessa tells Elena that she waltzed into the mortal world from the Other Side when Bonnie saved Jeremy and killed herself in the process.
- Elena lays all her cards on the table for Tessa, explaining that Silas was going to bring Bonnie back to life before he killed himself, but that now there is no chance of Bonnie returning because Damon will never put anyone’s life, including his own, before Elena’s. (cue fangirl “Awwww!”)
- In true Damon form, he does exactly as Elena predicted and tells Jeremy that the deal is off and Bonnie isn’t returning because he has to kill Silas to save Elena.
- Damon walks back into the warehouse and is greeted by a Traveler speaking a foreign language, and is soon ganged up on. They manage to neutralize his daylight ring (reminiscent of the witches in Mystic Falls), and say that they don’t want Silas dead yet.. right before Damon kills them both.
- Back at Whitmore College, Caroline finally gets some answers out of Professor Maxfield. She finds out that the secret society is called Augustine, and that while most recruits are legacies (children/relations of former members), some are recruited for their useful talents.
- The Augustine vampire, whose identity is still a mystery thanks to an ill-timed guest knocking on the Professor’s door, killed Elena’s roommate, Megan.
- While distracted by Stefan’s cooking abilities, Tessa hasn’t realized that Stefan has concocted a plan to save Elena from Tessa’s wrath at sundown. As soon as the sun sets, he stabs Tessa with the knife he was using and follows Elena out the front door.
- While Stefan was calming Elena, Tessa was telling Damon that the anchor is an immortal thing that Silas will never destroy, Amara.
- After breaking open dozens of crates, Silas finds Amara, feeds her a Traveler’s blood and brings her back from her dessicated state.
- Seconds after he brings her back to life, Amara stabs Silas with a piece of glass and drinks his blood so she can be cured and die. Amara doesn’t seem to have the same will to live for Silas that he had for her. Sucks to be Silas.
- Katherine somehow gets her hands on Professor Maxfield’s voice recorder, and listens to enough to find out that he has been doing tests on “subjects,” one of whom she believes is the Augustine vampire that he told Caroline about.
- Katherine tells Maxfield about her being a doppelganger and asks for his help to save her life, as she believes that she is now slowly dying.
- At the warehouse, Amara is stumbling around murmuring to herself, “leave me alone.” Damon finds her.
- Elena thanks Stefan for saving her life when he brings her home to the Salvatore mansion. She goes on to tell him that he has always looked out for her and it’s nice that even without his memories, he’s still Stefan.
- Damon and Jeremy are throwing a pity party for themselves due to their failure to bring Bonnie back. They let Elena in on the big twist for the episode though, and Damon introduces Elena to Amara, whom he has dubbed Crazypants.
- Tessa is waiting for Stefan to return to his bedroom, and after having been betrayed by him, is eager to give him all his miserable memories back.
What did you think of the episode? There were quite a few twists and turns along the way, but a lot of secrets were spilled and hopefully some pieces were put together.
This is The Vampire Diaries after all though, so not all of our questions were answered. If that knife Matt is supposed to protect isn’t the anchor, then what makes it so important? Was Elena’s dad a member of the Augustine society-thing at Whitmore? How is the Mystic Falls Scooby gang going to protect Amara from the Travelers?
There are tons more questions left unanswered, so feel free to share them below and speculate on what could happen next week when The Vampire Diaries season 5 returns with episode 7, “Death and the Maiden.”
