The Vampire Diaries season 5, episode 4, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” just finished airing on the west coast, and it was quite the trip down memory lane! Check out our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.
Last week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, “Original Sin,” ended with Stefan having lost his memories due to Qetsiyah’s burning through his consiousness. The promos showed this could be a bit of a walk down memory lane for both Stefan and fans, and what a walk it was. Here are the highlights:
- Stefan has read through two of his old diaries, and while he knows all the worldly knowledge he could want, the date, year, and engine in the car, he does not remember anything about his life so far.
- After being goaded by Stefan into throwing the car into high gear, Damon crashes the car they stole, thereby proving him the ‘fun’ brother.
- Back at Whitmore, Caroline has befriended Jesse, Prof Maxfield’s assistant, in order to get closer to the head of the supernatural squad and get more information.
- Mystic Falls is celebrating “Remembrance Day” in which they ring bells for the deceased and remembering their lives. Caroline takes Jesse back to show him the celebration as well as get some studying done.
- Jeremy does some gratuitous push ups, which Bonnie thanks him for on behalf of all the girls stuck on the other side (and which we are pretty thankful for as well).
- Damon is allowing Stefan to have a little fun, hoping it will trigger something to remind him of his old life. Stefan clearly remembers all the vampire tricks, as he compels a Mystic Grill waitress to stay quiet while he feeds, but is interrupted by Damon before he can sink his teeth in.
- Damon takes Stefan to the Salvatore crypt to keep him away from all the blood-pumping temptations in town, where we learn that their mother died of consumption. Not a necessary thing to know, but definitely a Salvatore fun fact.
- Damon leaves Stefan in Elena’s hands while he goes to meet up with Jeremy who suddenly needs to talk… ALONE.
- Elena and Stefan get to talking about their relationship, and Elena decides to show him where they met. It’s sort of a Stelena memory scavenger hunt, if you will. She takes him to the school to show him the point of their collision in the hallway, which does not shake anything loose.
- Caroline and Jesse are flirting up a storm in Mystic Falls cemetary, while surrounded by people ringing bells for their dead loved ones. Jesse kisses Caroline.
- At the Salvatore mansion, Jeremy tells Damon about Bonnie being dead, against her wishes. Damon looks properly dejected and furious when he finds out that Bonnie is dead. Damon seems to be worried about what this will mean for Elena more than anything, and who could blame him?
- With the tune “Gravity” by Sarah Bareilles playing in the background (which is quite the callback to season 1, episode 2, “Night of the Comet” when Elena and Stefan were courting), Elena and Stefan almost kiss before she tells him that she is with his brother. The subsequent disappointment drives Stefan to run off on a quest to quench his thirst, which has resurged after Elena’s not-so-great news.
- Matt wakes up on the couch in the Lockwood mansion study with his hand cut and bleeding. He has taped himself sleeping, and witnesses himself answering his phone, speaking German, and threatening… well, himself.
- The other personality that is using Matt’s body tells Matt that he is supposed to keep the dagger he woke up with that morning safe from ‘the passengers’ — people who will be coming to look for it.
- Stefan runs into Caroline, threatens Jesse, whom Caroline compels to go away and hide. But this does not deter Stefan from finding him and feeding on him. Jesse does not know what Stefan is, and is not on vervain. Caroline heals him up and compels him to forget after Stefan runs off.
- Back at the Salvatore mansion, Stefan is burning his old journals. He does not want to remember who he was, and is trying to move forward, so he walks out on Damon and Elena.
- Damon told Elena that Bonnie died.
- Caroline tells Stefan about Bonnie’s death, and he tries to act appropriately, for Caroline’s sake, but as he doesn’t remember her, it’s hard for him to relate. He then promises to be there for Caroline in the wake of losing Tyler and Bonnie. He knows that she has been there for him, somehow, so he wants to do the same for her.
- In an incredibly moving (and tear-inducing) scene, we see Caroline, Matt, Elena, Damon, and Jeremy mourn for Bonnie. Caroline places a pom-pom from cheerleading at the memorial, Matt places the whistle from lifeguarding, Elena places a pile of feathers from when Bonnie first showed Elena her powers, and Damon places Bonnie’s grimoire as the final piece.
- Jeremy speaks for Bonnie as she tells Elena, Caroline, and Matt about how she has been watching them, and she always will.
- Professor Maxfield evaluates Jesse after his trip to Mystic Falls, and finds that he has vampire blood in his system. He then kills Jesse, thereby turning him into a vampire. While we don’t know what this means for the professor’s agenda, we’re sure that Caroline will find this very interesting.
What an episode, huh? For those still wiping their tears, don’t worry, we are right there with you. At least now that everyone knows that Bonnie is dead, the gang can move on and try to solve the Silas problem on their own, as well as face the challenges that are sure to come their way via Professor Maxfield.
