A deleted scene from The Vampire Diaries season 1 proves that Matt Donovan may have more supernatural ties than he thought.
Mystic Falls’ resident human has been missing so far in The Vampire Diaries season 8. At the end of season 7, Matt Donovan gave up his dealings with supernatural entities (ironically after receiving the advice from the ghost of his fiancé) and left town. He finally decided that the battle against the supernatural was not his to fight, and he left it behind.
Matt’s family has been largely absent in The Vampire Diaries. His sister, Vicki, has definitely made her mark on the series, but the rest of his family is MIA. We’ve never even met Matt’s father, but we did meet his mother, Kelly, in The Vampire Diaries season 1.
Her claim to fame, at the time, was being an unfit mother and making out with the majority of Matt’s friends, including both Tyler and Damon. However, her character could have been so much more. A deleted scene from The Vampire Diaries season 1, episode 15, “A Few Good Men,” reveals that there’s more to Kelly than meets the eye.
So, it looks like Vicki Donovan wasn’t the only family member who crossed over to the supernatural side! From the deleted scene, it’s not clear exactly what myth Kelly Donovan falls into, but it was later deduced that she was a succubus, which is a female demon.
In a later interview with SheKnows.com, The Vampire Diaries showrunner, Julie Plec, commented on Kelly’s identity and why the story line was dropped. When she was asked if we could expect to see any different supernatural creatures on the show, she responded with the following:
“You know, we keep trying to think of those and weirdly enough, we find ourselves stumped more often than not. There’s our favorite story of season 1: we tried to make Matt Donovan’s mother a succubus and we shot it and we wrote three scripts about it. When we saw it for the first time we realized this isn’t right. This doesn’t feel like part of our show. It doesn’t feel like we’re in the right scientific world. I’m not saying we’ll not ever see other creatures, but definitely thus far, we are staying grounded in that one zone.”
Plec was right. The Vampire Diaries wasn’t in the “right scientific world” for that mythology at the time, but it could be now! The introduction of Sybil, the siren, has opened up the world to all kinds of different myths and legends.
The siren and the succubus do not stem from the same mythology, but that doesn’t mean that Sybil and Kelly can’t be related in the world of The Vampire Diaries. We haven’t seen all that Sybil has to offer, so she could definitely have the “kiss of death” power that Kelly displayed in the deleted scene. While Kelly hasn’t shown the same talent for mind control as Sybil, she did have a borderline supernatural ability to attract men in her short stay in Mystic Falls.
Matt Donovan is finally set to come back in The Vampire Diaries season 8, episode 4! Regarding his reappearance, the episode synopsis says, “Finally, Matt (Zach Roerig) returns to the fray after his past and present collide in an unexpected way.” We haven’t seen anything in season 8, so far, that would lead to that collision, so it could have something to do with his family.
To add fuel to the theory, the trailer for season 8, episode 4, features Sybil referencing her sister! You can watch the trailer at the bottom of this post. Even though Sybil’s abilities might differ slightly from Kelly’s, they’re closely related enough that Kelly could be the sister she’s referring to.
Matt has been struggling to fit in with his supernatural friends for quite a while. He’s constantly torn between protecting the people he loves and protecting the innocent humans that they threaten. Up until the end of season 7, he was continuously drawn into the supernatural fight for one reason or another.
Even though fans have loved Matt since the beginning of the show, it’s been difficult to get behind him in the past few seasons as he’s wavered in his loyalty to Salvatore and co. in favor of the rest of the town. In the final season, it’s important that his character has a good story line so that fans can send him off in a positive way.
If Matt’s family has its own ties to the supernatural, it could explain why he always seemed to find himself in the middle of their battles. Bringing Matt’s family back into the show would be a perfect way to explain the issues he’s been dealing with, and to close out his story. If Kelly’s supernatural, Matt might even have some magical blood, himself!
