Ian Somerhalder let it slip that The Vampire Diaries season 8 would be the final chapter of the show and fans had a lot to say about the reveal!
There has been speculation on if and when The Vampire Diaries should/would end for a couple seasons now, and it looks like we finally have our answer, for better or for worse, thanks to Ian Somerhalder. The verdict is that the show will end following its eighth season, next year.
Julie Plec, The Vampire Diaries showrunner has yet to comment on Somerhalder’s statement so the story isn’t 100% confirmed yet, but let’s do some quick math to get to the bottom of it, shall we?
The Vampire Diaries — Elena Gilbert — a Bennett witch — a Salvatore brother = Not entertaining, not sustainable, not on the air, nothing.
Even if Somerhalder was simply implying that the show would be over for him after season 8, it basically means the same thing, as Julie Plec has said many times that the show would only continue as long as he and Paul Wesley were on board.
Ever since Somerhalder’s comments about the future of The Vampire Diaries were reported, the fandom has been feeling a wide range of emotions. Let’s see what the fans think, knowing that our days of reading diaries, shipping Stelena, Delena, Steroline, Klaroline, Bamon, Bonenzo, etc., wondering how/why Matt is still alive, and hanging out in the Mystic Grill are officially numbered.
These fans are going to need to take a few ‘personal days’ this week to cope with the news.

Feelings aside, these people have some suggestions for ‘The Vampire Diaries’ writers.

@julieplec can @KatGraham and @paulwesley have a lot of scenes next season I mean damn they barely speak #stefonnie #tvd
— Sαhαℜα (@SaharaWarez) April 10, 2016
Only way to save @cwtvd is by making a #Twilight crossover & bringing #Rosalie #Jacob & #Renesmee into the pic LOL #SERIOUSNOTSERIOUS #TVD
— MEReadALOT (@MEReadALOT) April 11, 2016
@julieplec should focus on the main four cast members instead of bringing in extras, since its the last season #tvds8 #tvd
— Sαhαℜα (@SaharaWarez) April 10, 2016
I'm okay with @cwtvd ending after season 8 as long as Stefan an Caroline end up together and Damon and Elena end up together! #TVD
— Mandy Carr (@MandyTTCarr) April 10, 2016
#TVD should have ended 2 seasons ago, but glad season 8 will be its last. Nina Dobrev better come back for the final episode.
— alessandra (@candidlysam) April 10, 2016
Elena better come back for AT LEAST the last episode of the last season (season 8) or I have officially wasted years of my life #TVD

Things look bleak right now, but some optimists in ‘The Vampire Diaries’ fandom are holding out hope for the future.
I would love to see a #TVD season 9 even without Ian and Kat. So i still hope the CW won´t confirm the end at the upfronts. #HopeforTVDS9

JP lately said that when #TVD ends, our favs will appear on #TheOriginals. So Klaroline is officially back now that s8 is the last of TVD.
— klaroline is back. (@perhapsonedaykc) April 10, 2016
me, still wishing that klaus will be caroline's last love, just like how he intended to be #klaroline #tvd #theoriginals
— mer-maid. (@giveunicornahug) April 11, 2016
Some of this hope may not be in vain! If The Originals continues after its fourth season next year, it is always a possibility that some of the characters from The Vampire Diaries will make their way over to New Orleans. For now though, we still have the rest of season 7 and a full season 8 to see where the story takes us.
