The Vampire Diaries season 7 finale was chock-full of emotional punches. We’re ranking 5 of the best moments that still have us reaching for a tissue.
The conclusion of The Vampire Diaries season 7 made us laugh, cry, gasp and scream, almost simultaneously! It may have been lower on the action than some of the show’s previous finales, but it definitely didn’t disappoint in terms of character drama and emotion.

Basically every scene of the episode gave us some pretty extreme feelings, but we’ve picked out a few standouts that we think will stick with us through the long, vampire-less summer, until the season 8 premiere.
5. The ‘I lied, there was a thaw’ Steroline moment
The three year time jump really messed things up for one of The Vampire Diaries power couples! Caroline was thrust into a whole new life with her little family, and Stefan was forced into a life on the run with Valerie. All of this drama put a serious freeze on the heat between these two characters, but in The Vampire Diaries season 7 finale, the thaw finally came.
Caroline was trying her hardest to keep up the cold front between her and Stefan, but things changed when he took the risk of going into the Armory. It made her realize that life, even a vampire life, is too short to not take what you want when it’s right in front of you. Their relief when they were back in each other’s arms was so powerful, and it lead to that beautiful Steroline kiss that we’ve been waiting way too long for!
4. The ‘take me with you’ Matt and Penny moment
Poor Matt Donovan has been fighting some intense demons for a long time now. He’s just a human, living in a supernatural world, and he’s learning that he can’t really keep up. We didn’t get to know Penny very well, because of all the time jump madness, but when we did see her with Matt, it was definitely the happiest we’ve seen him in a long time. Even her ghost made him smile and laugh!
One of the saddest parts of this scene was that Matt really just wanted to go with the ghost of his fiance, rather than stay in this world that keeps chewing him up and spitting him back out. Luckily though, it wasn’t his time, and he lives to fight another day. However, because of Penny’s advice, he’ll hopefully be fighting a more manageable fight from now on.
3. The Bonenzo, ‘YAY, I don’t want to kill you anymore’ moment
This scene elicited literally all the emotions! Bonnie’s huntress curse was forcing her to kill the person she loves the most, which would have killed her also. Bonnie’s tears made the scene powerful enough, but then Enzo delivered a British-accented speech that added so much weight to the moment. Both of these characters have had so much pain in their lives, and it’s clear that their relationship has been an important place for them each to call home over the last three years.
The tension was so thick you could have cut it with a wooden stake, until Damon pulled through and saved the day! The relief from all three characters was palpable, and Bonnie and Enzo sealed their safety with a kiss that made the whole world swoon.
2. The ‘OMG it’s Elena I’m going back into the vault’ moment
Even ignoring the Delena of it all, it was so emotional to hear Elena’s voice and actually see her on the show again! Yes, the visuals were simply flashbacks, but it was confirmed that Nina Dobrev actually came in to record new dialogue for this scene! Her presence has definitely been missed in The Vampire Diaries season 7, so it was amazing to get a glimpse of her character again.
Damon was in the clear, but one word from the love of his life had him running back into danger. It brought back a rush of memories and emotions for him that he just couldn’t ignore. For fans, the sudden onslaught of Delena feelings was almost too much to handle!
1. The ‘hug me, you fool’ Salvatore brother moment
The Vampire Diaries season 7 has focused so heavily on the Salvatore love story, that we couldn’t not give them the number one spot in the finale! Damon finally realized that it wasn’t just his love for Elena that made him worthy of her. His love for Stefan, and the other people in his life, is also capable of making him the hero that he’s capable of being.
It obviously killed Stefan to let his brother go into that vault alone, but he showed his faith in his brother by respecting his decision, and letting him go. We’ve been waiting so long for that Salvatore hug, and it definitely did not disappoint!
