The Vampire Diaries has just been moved to Fridays, so it makes us wonder: Should the show end after the current season or continue with another?
We’ve been speculating that this is probably the end of The Vampire Diaries ever since Nina Dobrev left last year, and now that the show has been moved to a new, less popular night, we’re really starting to think this is the case. So today we’re trying to figure out why it would be cancelled but also why it might stick around…
Why ‘The Vampire Diaries’ could be cancelled
Other than moving The Vampire Diaries from its classic Thursday 8:00 p.m. time slot, there are quite a few other reasons why the network could seek to cancel the show. The most prominent being that after Nina Dobrev’s departure, many fans had stopped watching, arguing that they don’t care to see Damon or Stefan with anyone else.
Even if Stefan has now been paired with Caroline, there are still some hardcore Stelena shippers who were holding out hope that the show’s original couple would once again get together. Unfortunately with Elena now in a sleep for at least 60-80 years and Stefan now pining after a new girl, those hopes are crushed.
There’s also the fact that the show has been revealing what the characters’ futures would be in the next three years with the most recent episodes, each containing a flash-forward to three years from now. While it’s always possible that Bonnie could do some huge time-travelling magic spell, we doubt that’s within her capabilities and think it’d be hard to work around a future that’s already been set.
We know Alaric has twins and is engaged to Caroline, Damon desiccates himself until Elena wakes up, and Stefan sticks around to keep them safe, so unless the entire future turns out to be false, there’s almost no reason for the show to continue past this season.
How ‘The Vampire Diaries’ could go on for another season
Despite all the signs pointing to the end of an era, there’s still a chance that The Vampire Diaries can be renewed for an eighth season. With Elena now gone, the show has been given a brand new vibe, and it feels almost like a different show completely. Gone are the awkward, terrible love-triangle moments — they’ve been replaced by family drama, mythology and fantastic villains.
While we could be finally done learning about the Salvatores, a new season could help explain Bonnie’s witch lineage more since that’s something we’ve barely gotten in the past, or maybe even a season all about Matt and his survival in a town filled with supernatural killers. We could also see the show revealing what could happen between now and the three years from now that we see in the current-flashforwards; there’s three years worth of story there, so that could be an interesting few seasons to figure out exactly how the characters get there!
Granted, we’re in the process of finding out how the characters get to their future-selves in this season’s episodes, but anything can happen!
