It’s time to rise from your desiccation little vampires. The Vampire Diaries is back with season 7, episode 16, “Days of Future Past.” Unfortunately, some characters will be a lot more past than future. Who will live and who will die? (spoiler free)
After a three week hiatus of The Vampire Diaries, the Salvatore brothers will once again be making our screens a little more beautiful. When Ian Somerhalder, whom we all know as Damon, wasn’t exercising his on camera chops in The Vampire Diaries, season 7, episode 16, he was working hard behind the camera as the director of the episode!
Since he put so much of himself into this one, he has been promoting the episode like crazy on social media and has provided some very useful, though upsetting, information about what we should expect. In an interview with TV Guide, Ian revealed that “we lost some very wonderful, very beautiful characters in this episode.” To further drive home the point, he took to instagram to reveal that the episode will really “tug at [our] heartstrings” (also, he’s doing a really cool giveaway that you should get involved in!).
Unless this is just a cruel April Fools prank and this will actually be a happy-go-lucky, musical installment of The Vampire Diaries where everyone holds hands and sings “Give Peace a Chance,” we’re going to have to break out the tissue box for this one. So, which of our beloved, or not so beloved characters could we be losing in The Vampire Diaries, season 7, episode 16?
Who will live?
While you can never say for sure, there are some faces that we’re 99% confident we’ll be seeing going forward on The Vampire Diaries.
- The Salvatore brothers: While they would love us to believe that Rayna is going to take one of the siblings out, they’re safe. End of story.
- Caroline: Miss Forbes has secured leading lady status on the show, and they really can’t lose her now. Besides, we’ve already heard from Julie Plec that Caroline and Stefan will reunite in season 7, episode 19 (which also gives further protection to Stefan. Like he needed it).
- Bonnie: The show has proven time and time again that they can and will kill Bonnie. They’ve only done it five or six times at this point. However, times have changed since Elena decided to get some much needed shut eye. Besides her being a fan favorite character and a redeeming quality of the show in the late seasons, if Bonnie dies, Elena wakes up. While we miss Elena, we don’t see that switch happening any time soon.
- Valerie and Enzo: For better or for worse, I think these two are being shielded by the protagonist armor of Stefan and Bonnie at the moment. We’ve only been given a taste of the Stefan/Valerie and Bonnie/Enzo relationships and the timing isn’t really right to kill off one half of either pair. Even if fans can say for sure that they have no interest in the relationship, a Valerie or Enzo death right now would lead to one of our heroes grieving for something that we don’t understand and can’t experience with them.
Who could die?
If any of the characters on this list are your favorites, tread carefully going into The Vampire Diaries, season 7, episode 16.
- Mary Louise: The promotional images, like the one seen above, for the upcoming episode do not paint a pretty picture for Mary Louise. She is lying in what looks to be the world’s most uncomfortable hospital bed, so at best she’ll be walking away with some pretty serious back trouble. I would be sad to see Mary Louise go, as I really like her relationship with Nora, but the heretics have struggled to find a foothold in season 7 and they could kill her off just to tie up some loose ends on that story line. Even though many fans aren’t overly invested in Mary Louise, they could definitely still make this death tug at our heartstrings, as was promised, due to her relationship and connection to Nora. Mary Louise is my number one pick for who we will be saying goodbye to.
- Nora: If Mary Louise were to die, Nora’s character would lose a lot of purpose. I would love to see her stay on because her and Bonnie could have a great friendship and it has been fun to see her navigate the modern world, but she hasn’t found enough of a place in the core group to really warrant taking her further. That being said, if Nora and Mary Louise both die, it could lessen the impact of Mary Louise’s death. I’d give Nora a 30% chance of making it through the episode.
- Alaric: Just like Bonnie, Alaric has had more than his fair share of the grave. As far as series regulars go, he is relatively disposable. It would also he extremely heart breaking to see him go so soon after finally achieving some sort of family and happiness. I’m tearing up just thinking about it! In my opinion, he has a 50/50 shot.
- Matt: Another main character that the show could lose and still continue. Matt’s chances of dying are heightened by the fact that he’s kind of crossed over to the villain side of the line. Even though his story is often boring, I think most fans would still feel very sad if Matt died and I know the characters would have a tough time with it. Because of the deep impact it would have on the show and the fact that they’ve made him into a bit of a villain, I only give Matt a 40% chance of surviving.
- Rayna: Yawn… if it’s only Rayna that’s going to die, you can probably feel safe without the tissues. Another 50/50.
