In The Vampire Diaries, season 7, episode 12, “Postcards from the Edge,” we finally came face to face with the elusive huntress in present day. Just as the threat of Julian is eliminated, the threat of Rayna Cruz is becoming much bigger!
This episode started off a little slow for me as it seemed to be quite predictable from the events of last week, but that only made the events near the end so much more shocking and amazing to watch! There is always one or two episodes near the middle of a season of The Vampire Diaries where the focus truly shifts from the villain that began the season and the villain that will ultimately end it, and this was the one for season 7.
There were two distinct things that helped make this transition happen, and the first was Stefan Salvatore, who managed to reach a whole new level of both sweetheart and stud in this episode.
It was awesome that Elena had such a positive effect on Damon’s attitude and actions (at the very least when she was around) but that meant Stefan didn’t have to try to help Damon be a better person quite as much. I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing him actively love and care for Damon when he was so desperately in need of that. Even when Damon confessed what he had done to Elena and Stefan cried his beautiful Stelena tears, his thoughts were not to blame his brother but to seek revenge on Julian for causing him to act that way.
I was absolutely shocked when Stefan showed up to kill Julian. Time and time again it has been proven that Stefan is not the impulsive brother, so I figured he would just get more serious about making a plan to take Julian down. Apparently hurting Damon, Elena, Valerie and Stefan’s unborn child is exactly the combination to make Stefan go rogue and I’m so glad he did! It will be interesting to see what happens with Julian’s gang now that their ring leader has been exterminated.
Now that Julian is gone and it looks like Valerie, Nora and Mary Louise are more friend than foe, we can set our heretic worries aside (at least for now) and focus on the next enemy: Rayna Cruz.
We’ve only gotten little bits of information about her in almost every episode of The Vampire Diaries season 7 and tonight was no exception. However, we did get a face and a name so it counts for a little bit more!
We also learned that she chased the heretics through Europe for decades in the 1900s (which makes her crazy old because let’s not forget, hunters are technically human!) and that she was given her powers and sword from shamans. I still have so many questions about her, mostly about the mark that she leaves and who she targets but now that she is the main villain I doubt we’ll have to wait much longer to find out everything we’re dying to know.
I’m a little confused about what the purpose of her being cloaked as an elderly woman was and I’m intrigued to see what Enzo’s part in all of this is. I was actually really excited to see him tonight despite him often being quite boring and out of place.
It was also great to see more of the heretics interacting with our heroes now that I’ve let my guard down a tiny bit with them. There are some really cool, different and interesting relationships forming and I can’t wait to see them play out in the rest of the season!
