After two failed pilots on The CW, Kiera Cass’ The Selection finds new life on the big screen with Me Before You‘s’ Thea Sharrock.
The first installment of Kiera Cass’ YA series, The Selection, was published in 2012. Ever since then, the project has been courted by Hollywood, originally intended as a CW drama series.
It’s not hard to see why: The Selection is a rich, engaging romance set in a future that’s half-fairytale, half-oppressed dictatorship; in a world where people are divided into castes and forced into a predetermined profession, the young and handsome Prince Maxon must partake in a The Bachelor-type ‘selection process,’ choosing his bride among a group of 35 girls that are brought to the castle.
Main character America Singer is there to be a wild card and has already found the love of her life back home — but, of course, nothing in love or politics is ever that simple.
Originally, the CW series was set to star Aimee Teegarden as America Singer, but when the pilot was rejected, a second pilot starring Yael Grobglas (now Petra on Jane the Virgin) was ordered for 2013.
That pilot was also rejected, however, and the project lay dormant until Warner Bros. picked up the movie rights in 2015.
And now, Variety has learned that Me Before You director Thea Sharrock is set to helm The Selection movie, from a script by Katie Lovejoy.
This is definitely good news, and at this point, it’s hard to imagine that The Selection adaptation won’t succeed eventually! But don’t get too excited just yet — Kiera Cass warns on Twitter that the movie is not yet greenlit:
So, what does adding a director mean for the #SelectionMovie? It means we're one step closer. And I'm happy with the choice…

We are still not greenlit though. The best thing you can do is cheerlead to @wbpictures and I will keep you posted! #SelectionMovie

But having Thea Sharrock on board, whose adaptation of Me Before You has been a huge financial success, is definitely a good start!
