The Originals season 2, episode 3, “Every Mother’s Son,” just finished airing. See what revelations came about during the mini-family reunion tonight.
The Originals starts out with Esther cooking up some sort of concoction. We then see Hayley helping herself to some lovely snacks on the table and Klaus notices an invitation…from Mommy Dearest. Klaus tells Hayley the story about Esther’s seventh child. His name was Henrique and he died before Klaus was born. Klaus’ birth father’s wolf pack was the cause of his death and in return Mikael killed Klaus’ birth father.
We flash back to Esther giving a young Klaus a pep talk on not being afraid; apparently his brothers were picking on him. She tells him she’ll be around to protect him. Forever. Esther enchanted a necklace and asks him to wear it always. They then dance around a roaring fire where he loses the necklace but brother, Finn, finds it and returns it.
Marcel sends new vampire Gia to take Elijah to see Lenore, another witch who is helpful to Marcel and the vampires. Elijah asks Lenore to let him know when a “certain” witch jumps into a different body. Lenore needs a python and an enchanted item from the witch in question. The second they leave, Vincent walks in…
Klaus asks Marcel for a necklace that he had given him long ago. The same necklace his mother had given him years before. Hayley is tasked with giving the necklace to Lenore and getting the snake from Gia. Gia is upset with Marcel because he wants Elijah to teach Gia the vampire ways. Marcel says Elijah’s Achilles heel is that he can’t help trying to fix what’s broken, she just needs to be that for him.
Oliver meets up with Vincent (Finn), and Oliver is weary because he was expecting Cassie. Vincent delivers Oliver his moonlight ring. Cassie tells Vincent to have Oliver “persuade” Lenore to give them details on why Elijah met with her earlier. Hayley shows up and makes it look as if Oliver was overtaken so he doesn’t look as if he’s let Lenore go on purpose – since he’s working undercover for Hayley.
Elijah and Klaus await their dinner guests when Vincent walks up. It is deduced that Vincent is actually their brother Finn and things get real. Vincent tells them that tonight is meant to be a happy occasion, though he reminds Klaus that he spent 900 years daggered in a box. There’s a lot of back and forth between the three brothers about how their mother treated them as children but it abruptly stops once Cassie/Esther/Mommy Dearest enters.
Esther says that everything she’s done for her children has been to protect them. She reminds them of when Klaus challenged Mikael and how she didn’t let him get hurt. We then flash back to Klaus stabbed by Mikael. Esther is there and Klaus goes into detail of their quarrel and how he wouldn’t give up his necklace to Mikael.
Lenore and Hayley are working the spell. Lenore says the next time Esther jumps into another body she’ll be branded with a distinctive symbol on the back of her hand. Lenore says that Esther’s love is very, very strong.
At this moment during dinner Klaus realizes the necklace made him “weak” and Mikael despised his weakness. Esther didn’t want Klaus to be full of rage and kill another being to start the wolf curse. This upsets Klaus immensely. He tells her that the only reason she did that was so Mikael wouldn’t find out about her infidelity. In return it made Mikael hate Klaus because he was weak, all while Klaus was under the impression that he was his real father. Klaus says, “You’re the author of everything I am.” That is the exact moment that Esther passes out. Elijah and Klaus move toward Finn, but he uses magic to stop them.
Lenore has just stopped mumbling her spell words and Hayley asks her if it is done. Lenore makes some odd movements and then Hayley notices a mark on the back of her hand. Esther has just changed bodies and moved into Lenore’s. Hayley’s phone rings and Lenore allows her to only say that she’s with Lenore at her shop. That’s been the plan all along.
Cassie wakes up and has no clue where she is or who Elijah and Klaus are as they interrogate her about their mother’s whereabouts. She knows nothing, so they head to save Hayley. Lenore acknowledges all the good that Hayley has brought into Klaus and Elijah’s lives. Lenore is offering Hayley the change to rid herself of being a hybrid…just as Klaus and Elijah walk in.
Lenore says that Hayley is safe to go as the only reason Esther is there is to “heal our family.” She wants to undo their vampire curse and give them new bodies. Klaus declines the offer and she raises her hands to hundreds of crows flying in and says there will be a time when they’ll beg for it. She then escapes.
Hayley, Klaus and Elijah are talking about the offer that Esther has put on the table. Hayley says she was tempted by the offer and then walks away after making a quip about Elijah only speaking to her when she’s in danger.
Elijah and Klaus have a touching moment when Elijah explains that no matter if that necklace made him weak, Elijah has never thought of him to be weak. Klaus says the rest of the family should learn his ways, as he’s the wisest one.
Elijah meets Gia at a bar and asks if she’s going to play her violin. She says that since she’s been turned she hasn’t been able to. Elijah explains that it’s due to their senses and emotions being heightened. He will help her.
Gia meets with Marcel afterward and tells him that Marcel was right, Elijah found something that he can fix.
In our final scene, we see Esther and Vincent as she explains her plans to take everything away from Klaus and Elijah that they love and hold dear. They’ll then come begging to be released from the pain and despair and she will do so, because nothing beats a mother’s love for her children.
