Did Freya work a miracle and find a cure for Lucien’s bite to save Cami? Check out what happened in The Originals season 3, episode 19, “No More Heartbreaks.”
Some episodes of The Originals are stuffed full of B-stories and subplots that keep us guessing and distract us from the main storyline. “No More Heartbreaks” was a very different kind of episode. Everything in this episode was designed to further one story, to tell one plot thoroughly and give a goodbye worthy of a beloved character. Read on for all the somber details.
Rub it in, Lucien
Lucien, AKA the instigator of the events of this episode, spent his portion of “No More Heartbreaks” celebrating and reveling in the pain he is causing Klaus. He has a brief interaction with Davina in which we learn that he is impervious to any magic in the Quarter thanks to the ancestors. That’s definitely going to complicate matters when it comes time to put him down once and for all.
Saving Cami
Everything in this episode was about saving Cami or finding answers that could help in the fight against the ancestors, also known as Lucien’s bankrollers. They’ve provided him all the power and immunity he could ever want, all in the name of ending the Mikaelson line once and for all.
Anywho, Freya, Vincent, Hayley, and Davina all go about getting answers in this episode. Freya brings salves and treatments to slow the infection. Vincent collects Lucien’s blood in hopes of it being the miracle cure for his bite that Klaus’ has been for hybrid bites. Hayley fetches Hope to see if her miracle mix of Mikaelson, wolf, and witch blood could be the answer. Davina goes straight to the source to see what kind of power Lucien is working with. No cures found.
Once Upon a Dream
While everyone else runs around looking for a cure, Klaus spends his time giving Cami the perfect last day. When this sequence began at a corner cafe with the delightful sounds of New Orleans jazz in the air, I felt myself being taken back to Damon’s act of mercy for Rose back in The Vampire Diaries season 2. Klaus turned Cami’s final day from a painful, torturous death into a final romp through the New Orleans she has always loved. Complete with a recreation of the night they first met, Klaus pulled out all the stops.
It was a beautiful way to say goodbye to a character that has always tried to see beauty and goodness in everyone. Cami’s positivity and dedication to righteousness was with her right to the end. She may have lost a bit of her bravery as death knocked the breath out of her, but she used her final words to remind Klaus that he is loved, that he has humanity in him, and that love will make him strong.
In her last moments, she reminds us of the horrors that the O’Connells have been cursed with in their time as she asks Klaus to remember what verse was engraved on her brother, Sean’s, headstone. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” She pleads with him to end the darkness that has reigned in the Mikaelson family, to be a light for his daughter and to end the cycle of violence begun with Mikael. While the ancestors may be trying to end the abominations they believe the Originals to be, Klaus and his siblings are rising above and becoming better than their creators thanks to souls like Cami O’Connell.
Davina
While absolutely everything else about this episode was about Cami, Davina seemed unable to focus on her friend’s demise. Instead, Davina confronted Lucien about the curse that the ancestors have bestowed upon Kol. In exchange for bringing Kol back from the dead, the ancestors decided that he would be the instrument of Davina’s death. They cursed him with a hunger for Claire blood that could only be quenched with her death.
Kol thought he found a way around the ancestor’s curse, courtesy of a very familiar dagger and a vial of White Oak ash, but the ancestors literally shook the earth to bring him back unable to stop himself this time. We watch in horror as a second character is drained of life right before our eyes. Davina is drunk dry by the man she loves, who wakes seconds after the light leaves her eyes. The horror that Kol sees when he awakes from his blood-thirst is unmatched.
