Mindy and Danny are committed to each other — but with thousands of miles between them, will their relationship become stronger or weaker?
Last week on The Mindy Project, “San Francisco Bae,” we met the man to whom Mindy Lahiri lost her virginity: Alexander Laskin (Lee Pace). While she didn’t really seem attached to him in the flashbacks we saw, he clearly held a torch for her for years.
Alex cut off his ponytail and developed a YouTube-like site that made him a billionaire, all to become a man of which Mindy could be proud. Meanwhile, she was busy attending medical school, building her career in New York City and falling in love with fellow OB/GYN, Danny Castellano.
Let’s not forget, though — there were plenty of guys between Alex and Danny, some more suitable for Mindy than others, but none that she had to end up with. Because, for real, Mindy Lahiri is a woman who doesn’t need a guy, but does want one (evidenced by her desire to maybe eventually settle down with a family). But we digress.
Throughout last week’s episode, and especially after the reveal that Alex tried reconnecting with Mindy a few years ago, we saw her examine her relationship with Danny. It started with her calling Danny every few hours to check in, worried that he would be the one to forget about her — maybe she was afraid of the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality? — but in the end, it was Mindy that was reassuring Danny about her investment in their relationship.
Last week, Mindy Kaling tweeted the following:
Stsrting tonight, the next group of #themindyproject episodes have major game-changing plot twists. Watching too much #Homeland I think!

So what constitutes ‘game-changing’? Probably not an ex-flame returning, unless it plants a seed of doubt. Maybe the distance between Danny and Mindy will throw a wrench into their relationship? We won’t know for another two weeks because The Mindy Project will return for new episodes on January 27. Due to President Obama’s State of the Union Address, the show will not be new this week.
