I have a confession to make: I think that Mindy Kaling and I could be best friends. After watching her for years on The Office and reading her New York Times Bestselling essay collection Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), I was smitten with Miss Mindy. So when I heard she was coming out with her own sitcom, I was thrilled.
Following Zooey Deschanel’s quirky and fun New Girl in Fox’s Tuesday night lineup, The Mindy Project will delight Zooey’s fans and bring Kaling some new ones as well. But Kaling has something different, a complement to the “adorkableness” of New Girl’s Jess. She doesn’t have it all together, which is something viewers will find relatable.
In this Bridget Jones-style comedy, Mindy Lahiri (played by Kaling) is an OB/GYN who can’t seem to work out her personal life, even if she’s pretty talented at her day job. She wants her life to be a romantic comedy and finds ways to constantly reference her favorite movies. While out dating and trying to find the love of her life, Mindy has two main men who help her to anchor the show.
Chris Messina plays Danny, another doctor known for giving Mindy a hard time, but you can tell there could be some love interest potential there. Also coming into the mix is Jeremy (Ed Weeks), a handsome and charming Brit who Mindy wants so badly to be Hugh Grant in About a Boy. And since they are all practicing doctors at the same office, their interactions will cause laughter and perhaps just a little bit of drama. It seems to be the perfect recipe for your typical romcom.
Mindy is fresh, and while following some of the stereotypes of single life, her comedic genius and character will add a new take on this storyline.
You can catch the series premiere of The Mindy Project Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
