In the flurry to get the next big young adult novel made into a film, Fox has assigned its dystopian hope, The Maze Runner, to director Wes Ball.
Wes Ball is best known for Ruin, his Internet sensation short that amassed five million views in a very short period of time. The short was a teaser for a full-length film that he later sold to Fox.
The Maze Runner is the first in a trilogy by New York Times Bestselling author James Dashner. The story focuses on Thomas who wakes up in a lift and can only remember his name. When the doors open, Thomas finds himself in the Glade, a large open area surrounded by a stone wall. There are other boys there who cannot remember anything as well. The only thing the boys know for sure is that everyday the walls around them open to the maze and close tight at night. And every thirty days a new boy enters, until the day after Thomas, when a girl is brought into the Glade to deliver a message.
The Maze Runner trilogy finished with The Death Cure in October 2011 and Dashner just released a prequel novel, The Kill Order. The movie is currently in development with Wes Ball being attached to direct with Noah Oppenheim writing the script. Originally Catherine Hardwicke was said to be directing the film.
