So you’ve burned through 13 episodes of The Magicians in one sitting, now what?
Sometimes it’s hard to cope with the after effects of a good TV binge. The post binge-watching glow quickly recedes and we’re left floundering with nothing but a gaping hole in our chests and more questions than a person knows what to do with.
Frankly, there are times when a person just needs a little aftercare to help taper off all of that built up energy.
I don’t know about you guys but I never stood a chance after The Magicians dropped on Netflix in late December. A show that is essentially Harry Potter and Narnia inspired fan fiction? Bye. I’ll see you at the bottom of this marathon spiral.
For me The Magicians had just enough episodes to get me incredibly hooked but not enough to where I felt gorged. Which, to a normal healthy individual is probably a good thing. To a crazed fanatic who doesn’t know when to quit? Not so much.
If you’re in a similar boat, come with me on this journey as I eagerly await season 2.
Have a drink
If you made it through the entire season of The Magicians without a drink I applaud you. But after a season finale like that, you deserve one. In fact, Elliot would insist.
Syfy is actually ahead of the game on this one. They’ve concocted some official cocktail recipes that represent each of the characters from the show.
There’s Alice’s I Just Need A Sundae, Penny’s Blood and Hands, Margo’s Hangover Cure and of course Elliot’s bright green signature cocktail that we see him tossing back on the show.
Because I’m a dedicated journalist I’m planning on trying at least one of these drinks in the near future. You know, to test the integrity of the cocktail and make sure it really captured the essence of the character. It’s not like I’m looking for a reason to paw through my liquor cabinet or anything…
Let me know if I should report back on how my taste testing goes.
Read the books
I haven’t actually had the time to read the books in full yet but I’m working on it. What better way to dive into a new TV series than to go into the source material and pick apart every similarity and difference?
Like I said, I’ve only just begun reading the trilogy but I was surprised to find that they’d aged the characters up considerably. Surprised in a good way though.
Not only does it allow Syfy to get away with more risqué content, I love that it gives us a look at the group of individuals that is often overlooked.
The magicians on Syfy don’t seem to be any less confused, scared, or aimless than the magicians from Lev Grossman’s books. Grad school kids just happen to have a broader outlook on the world and a bit more life experience under their belts.
They’re still wildly under prepared for the challenges that await them. But the aging up allows the show to cut through some of the unnecessary teenage angst.
Watch season 1 again
Alright, I know this suggestion might sound a little extra but that’s basically how we roll here at Hypable.
After binge watching this show two weekends ago, I may or may not have binge watched it again the following weekend. Yeah, I know. Don’t Netflix shame me.
But apart from hibernating for the winter and basically never leaving the house, I knew I had missed a bunch of small details the first time around. I had an excuse to rewatch, okay?
One of my favorite details I picked up on my second time around – Elliot has two books dedicated to his life instead of one. That seems like an incredibly important detail, doesn’t it?
