Read our recap of The Legend of Korra season 2, episode 7 “Beginnings, Part 1,” which aired at the The Legend of Korra New York Comic-Con 2013 panel!
The episode opens as Korra is brought from the beach to the Firebenders. They say that they need to cleanse the darkness from Korra before it destroys her Avatar spirit.
Korra begins to see the Avatars of the past. The Avatars tell her that in order to regain her connection, she must return to the beginning. The last person she sees in Wan, who says he will show her how he became the first Avatar.
Via flashback we learn that Wan is unhappy with his lot in life, but he’s been trying to better himself. He is warned by his family that if he is caught stealing, he could be banned to the spirit isles.
Wan volunteers to go out on a hunt with the warriors of the village. In order to enter the spirit isle to get food, Wan and the others are given Firebending power to protect themselves from the spirits.
Once in the woods, Wan says he is too afraid, and leaves, but doesn’t return his fire power back to the lion turtle spirt.
Back at the village, Wan takes a group of commoners to the Chu’s palace to take food. Wan is caught, but refuses to tell the Chu’s who else was with him.
Wan is banished from the village, but is allowed to keep the element of fire.
He has a difficult time adjusting to the spirit world. Wan decides to save an animal from hunters, leading to the spirits embracing him.
The spirits agree to tell Wan where to find another lion turtle. However, Wan wants to stay and live with the spirits. The lead spirit replies, “I’ve always wanted a human for a pet.”
Time passes, and Wan grows into both a man and an impressive Firebender. He continues to protect the spirits and animals of the forest.
The people of the village often try to enter the forest and hunt for food, but Wan has become one with fire, and protects his friends.
One day, Wan finally decides to leave. On his journey, he comes across two spirits fighting.
Wan intervenes, for he fears the animals and other spirits will be harmed from their fighting. The white spirit informs Wan that she is Rava, and that he released a dark spirit named Vatu. By freeing Vatu, he released chaos into the world. The scene then cuts to Korra saying “Rava, I’ve found you.”
