If you’re sad because there’s no new Hobbit opening in theaters this December, here’s some good news: The Extended Editions are coming to theaters!
The One Ring has shared a new press release which indicates that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies are returning to theaters on select dates this fall in their extended format.
“Shown over three nights, the epic Peter Jackson trilogy will be the first time the extended editions have ever been released in theatres,” the press release states. “Also included will be an exclusive introduction by director Peter Jackson. First night showing starts Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. local. Tickets will be regular admission prices for each movie.”
A couple of these Hobbit Extended Edition events are already appearing on AMC’s website, but the theater chain has yet to formally announce the event themselves. Stay tuned!
Thankfully these films aren’t being shown back-to-back-to-back. All told, the Extended Editions of the series total nine hours of cinema.
For those who grew up with Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy has felt underwhelming. Longer versions of these already bloated films won’t sound appealing to most Tolkien fans, but there are definitely diehard Middle Earth enthusiasts out there who will attend. (This writer’s little brother prefers The Hobbit series over The Lord of the Rings series. Weird, right?)
This three-part event at theaters arrives one month before The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ Extended Edition gets its Blu-ray release, so it looks like the theatrical release will offer the first look at the finale’s Extended Edition.
For the record, here are the runtimes of each film in The Hobbit series in their normal and extended formats:
– An Unexpected Journey: 169 minutes (theatrical) / 182 minutes (extended)
– The Desolation of Smaug: 161 minutes / 186 minutes
– The Battle of the Five Armies: 144 minutes / 174 minutes
