Game of Thrones season 3 concluded tonight with the finale episode “Mhysa.” Share your thoughts and theories here!
In the final episode of Game of Thrones season 3, we were left to pick up the pieces following last week’s intense Red Wedding episode.
Robb and Catelyn Stark are now dead (complete with horrible imagery of Grey Wind’s head sown on Robb’s body), and this of course doesn’t only affect their remaining relatives (Arya, Sansa, Bran, Rickon, and Jon), but also the rest of the realm.
Because, as Tyrion ominously stated, “The North will never forget this.”
In tonight’s episode, the Lannisters found out about the deaths of the Starks, in an epic scene which saw Tywin send Joffrey to bed without supper.
Varys confronted Shae about her feelings for Tyrion, and tried to make her leave King’s Landing. “Tyrion Lannister is one of the few men left alive who can make this country a better place,” he explained. But Shae refused to give up on him.
Bran, Meera, Jojen, and Hodor made their way further North, and crossed paths with Sam and Gilly – finally two storylines intersected!
Sam made it to Castle Black (finally someone got where they’re going) and brought Gilly to meet Aemon.
The boy at Winterfell who has been torturing Theon all year was revealed to be Ramsay Snow, Roose Bolton’s bastard. Poor Theon reached his breaking point, and was finally transformed into “Reek.”
We finally caught up with the Greyjoys, and while Balon as good as gave up on Theon, Yara made it her mission to save him.
At Dragonstone, Davos Seaworth and Gendry bonded over being lowborn, and Davos decides to set him free to save him from Melisandre’s fires.
Ygritte caught up with Jon, and despite his claim that he loved her, she still shot him. Luckily, he seems to be impervious to arrows.
He made it to Castle Black, and was finally reunited with Sam. And at King’s Landing, Jaime and Cersei were also brought back together.
The final scene of the season went to Daenerys, who stood watch at Yunkai to wait for the freed slaves. When they finally appeared, they all shouted out, “Mhysa” to her, proclaiming her their mother.
Now we’ve got 10 whole months to wait for season 4, which will cover the second half of A Storm of Swords, the third novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga.
Recently, a Game of Thrones producer let slip that the current plan is to take the series through seven seasons total – although we don’t yet know how many books that will span.
Meanwhile, author George R.R. Martin is still writing the sixth out of seven books in the saga, The Winds of Winter. No release date has been set.
For those of you planning to read (or re-read) the books during the long break, check out Hypable’s Game of Thrones podcast, Game of Owns. During the last hiatus, the podcast hosts went through the first novel A Game of Thrones, and are likely to begin the second book, A Clash of Kings.
Apart from our reaction episode to the season 3 finale (which will go live tomorrow), we’ll also be doing our first ever live podcast episode on Tuesday – follow @GameofOwns for details!
