It’s been a while since we’ve seen the kinder, gentler serial killer twin on The Following season 3. Is Mark Gray still alive?
The short answer is yes.
The last we saw of Mark Gray was at the end of episode 5 when Mike was holding him at gunpoint. Ryan was there to talk him down, and in a moment of hesitation, Mark leaped from the boat and into the water. It’s been three whole episodes and we’ve yet to see him surface.

Next week’s promo (seen below) doesn’t offer any insight into Mark’s whereabouts or future plans, but we’ve got a few ideas.
On The Following, you can only trust that someone is dead if you’ve seen their body. Besides that, Mark’s story is far from over, and we’re certain we’ll be seeing him again. Theo may be taking up the spotlight for the moment, but more than likely Mark is lying in wait for his next opportunity.
The problem for Mark at the moment is that he’s now alone. His mother and brother have been long dead, and the few followers he’s gained are either in the ground or on the run. Kyle is dead, and Daisy has left town thanks to Theo’s mercy. Dr. Strauss is dead, and Theo himself is having nothing to do with the lone Gray twin.

Who does Mark have left? No one that we know of, but his mother’s network was extensive, and we’re sure there are other people he can call upon to help him hide, bide his time, and then strike when he deems it necessary.
Mark is anything but stable. However, Luke’s voice inside his head gives him an odd sense of balance, and we’re sure we’ll be seeing more of that side of Mark coming to the surface. It makes him dangerous, and after everything Mark has lost, he’ll be on a warpath soon enough.
What will he be after? The FBI, of course, and Mike Weston in particular. Nothing has changed for Mark, even while the world is crumbling down around Ryan Hardy and his fellow agents. Mark wants the FBI to admit to their lies and be held responsible for what they’ve done to his family. Plus, we don’t think the season will end without another face-to-face with Mike.
Theo may seem like the bigger threat right now, and perhaps he is, but we shouldn’t discount Mark. He does have a big heart, and sometimes he can seem like a bumbling fool, but he’s done his fair share of damage, too. He’s killed plenty of people on his own, even after the death of his mother and brother. When — or maybe even if — the FBI can take down Theo, Mark Gray will have his chance to return and exact revenge.
There are 13 episodes total in The Following season 3, so there are just five episodes left before we see the conclusion of this year’s story. Will that be enough time for Theo to meet his maker and for Mark to resurface with a vengeance?
