The Following season 3, episode 3, “Exposed,” just finished airing. Check out our recap and discuss the episode with us!
The Following season 3, episode 3 began with Ryan having a nightmare about Gwen still being alive inside a box of her own. We’re not going to be able to get that image out of our heads for a long, long time.
Mendez forces Ryan to do a press conference. She reveals sketches of Kyle and Daisy, who see themselves on TV and are worried about being recognized. Mark shows up and is angry that Ryan is still lying about killing Lily Gray. Ryan also calls Mark out as being responsible, and although Mendez plays it cool, clearly she was not ready for that information to be public knowledge just yet.
As Mark storms off, Kyle and Daisy decide they need to get out from under him as soon as possible. Daisy suggests they call Juliana, and it’s obvious that decision doesn’t come lightly. Back at the station, Ryan runs into Anna, who blames him for her husband’s death. They had no secrets, and she knows everything.
Max finds an old case file with the same MO as Neil, the man who put Agent Clarke in the box. They think this is their best lead to finding him, and therefore tracking down Mark. And speaking of Neil, when his father wanders off under the not-so-careful watch of his nurse, Neil calls the agency and says she didn’t show up that day. It’s probably safe to say she won’t be alive much longer.
The reporters from the press conference are kidnapped by Mark, while Daisy and Kyle meet up with Juliana. She refuses to help them flee, and instead tells them to keep Mark happy. They need him “for the endgame.” Oh, and she also hands them an assignment — Max Hardy.
Ryan tracks down an old “friend,” who points him in the direction of someone who can find him the man who makes the boxes. Our trio of heroes goes to a warehouse where they find the body of someone who looks dead but is, unfortunately, not. Another man shows up, and although he tries to flee, Mike and Ryan catch up to him.
The female reporter offers her partner to interview Mark, and he’s ecstatic by the idea. However, once he’s camera ready and is about to begin, he realizes the male reporter is a little out of it. “I think I broke Warren,” Mark says, before shoving a knife into his neck. Seems the female reporter is in charge of the interview now.
Mike and Ryan go all out with the bad cop shtick, but Max holds them off long enough to convince their captive to give them what they want. All he has is an email address, but that’s enough. Outside, Max tells Ryan she won’t cover up any more lies. The significant look she tosses at Mike makes it obvious she thinks he’s going off the deep end. We can’t help but agree.
They track Neil down to his Perry & Son woodworking shop where he’s making a box for Billy, who we presume is the nurse’s son. Neil goes on about how his father raised him right. So Neil’s father must’ve taught him everything he knows. How…lovely?
Ryan, Max, and Mike get to the nurse in time, but Neil escapes. He heads home, kills the new nurse, grabs his dad and flees right before the cops show up. Then he calls Daisy and tells her he blames her and Kyle for everything. They better watch their backs.
The woman is still interviewing Mark, but she starts to pit him against the couple. While they’re distracted, she runs upstairs, but they catch up and kill her. Mark then finds Max’s information in their room, and for a second tension is high. But Kyle is quick to play it off, saying it is a present for him instead. Mark hugs Daisy, then asks for them to bring the dead body back downstairs so they can finish the interview.
At Neil’s house, Ryan finds information to a GPS tracker that’s on Neil’s father in case he wanders off. They track the pair down to an open market. Neil spots them, and realizing that the GPS tracker is on his father, he pulls it off and they flee.
Neil kills a man, but his father sees him and begins to freak out. Perhaps he wasn’t the one who passed along those skills to his son after all? Or maybe he just doesn’t remember? Since his father refuses to come with him, Neil drives off in the dead man’s car with Ryan shooting after him.
Neil is understandably upset about his father, and when he sees a barricade at the end of the rode, he turns around, only to be chased down and rear-ended by Ryan. Ryan tries to talk Neil into giving himself up by saying he can reunite him with his father, but Neil doesn’t believe him and Max is forced to fire her weapon.
As Mark is finishing his interview, Luke warns him to keep an eye on Daisy and Kyle. (It’s wrong we’re glad Luke is still looking out for Mark, right?)
Mike skips Clarke’s ceremony, and Max is ready to chew him out for it. But he tells her it’s only because he blames himself and can’t face Clarke or Anna. Max hugs him, and her boyfriend spots them without her seeing.
Ryan asks Gwen to move in with him, and she agrees — but only if there are no secrets between them. Ryan thinks he can do that.
Max is on her way home and about to open the door to her apartment when her boyfriend finds her and asks her out to dinner. She agrees, which is lucky for her because Kyle and Daisy are inside. Instead, they set up cameras all over her apartment. Maybe she isn’t so lucky after all.
