It’s time to see just how dangerous Theo can be, and we are ready to see how Ryan Hardy and company handle this crazy new threat on The Following season 3, episode 8, “Flesh and Blood.”
‘The Following’ season 3, episode 8 recap
In a real twist, this episode begins with Theo putting Tucker Moore’s very dead body through a meat grinder piece by piece. That’s one way to hide a body.
Mendez is taking early retirement. Ryan goes to her to try and convince her that this job is in her blood. He’s unsuccessful, but she definitely seems to be thinking about it.
Joe Carroll is completing a mandatory psych eval, as is mandated for all death row inmates, and he swiftly kills the doctor and the guards in his room and quickly dons the uniform. He busts himself out of prison and Ryan Hardy meets him in a car to spring him from the joint. DEFINITELY a dream. We then come back to the present, out of Carroll’s daydream, and hear the doctor ask him, “Are you ready to die?” (We can’t help but feel like there’s no right answer to that question…)
Max got a hit on an employee at Manitec Security named Sam Louis. His record is absolutely spotless, which can only mean one thing, fabricated. There was no photo included in the file, but it’s a lead nonetheless.
Theo’s sees Ryan & Mike arrive via camera and he hits his computer to start working on hiding his past. The FBI literally watches as he erases and changes every single photo of himself to that of a totally different person. He erases his presence and the FBI watches him do it.
Ryan and Mike hit up the address listed for Sam Lewis. It’s an empty house, with the exception of a couple of cameras, and a suitcase containing his ID badge. He tells Weston that he feels like this is a trap, and that exact second, Weston steps on the rug and we hear a ‘click.’ Ryan realizes it just in the knick of time and dives at Mike, landing on top of him in the bathtub behind them, narrowly avoiding the worst of the blast.
The bomb used by Theo is untraceable, and their new supervisor shows up to let them know he believes them about the real killer not being the man they’ve been chasing. He wants Max to visit a sketch artist as she’s the only one that’s seen this guy’s face.
Joe Carroll faces off with the doctor in the courtyard only to find out that Ryan Hardy has declined Joe’s invitation to his execution. This more than unsettles Joe which is weird to see.
Ryan heads home and finds Gwen, her boss, and his wife just finishing their dinner. The one they joked about Ryan missing just the day before. Time for dessert though! And why not have some lovely chatter about why Joe Carroll’s death is not up for debate in his apartment. Ryan throws the couple out after Gwen’s boss insinuates that it would be a more worthwhile punishment for Joe to remain alive. Ryan then slips and uses Joe’s name in place of Mike’s name, and Gwen accuses him of losing it.
Theo throws his wife a surprise party, and her friends are all there to celebrate. Theo gets the third degree about some of his out of town work from one of her friends, and that woman pinpoints him as trouble. That very night she is at home with her husband and Theo is there with a gun. He kills the wife first, and then kills her husband as well. All in a serial killer’s day’s work.
Ryan makes Gwen breakfast to try and get back in her good graces, but after throwing her boss out the night before, he’s going to have to do a hell of a lot better than that. Gina Mendez shows up at Ryan’s door to let him know that she’s “in until we catch him.” One last case for her.
Theo answers the door to a detective who informs him and his wife that her friend and husband were both found dead of what the police suspect is a murder suicide. Theo sure does know how to cover his tracks, doesn’t he.
The FBI locates the name of the person that vouched for Louis on his background check, Eldon Wyck. Ryan, Mike, and Gina pay him a visit and discover no one at home. Ryan kicks the door in and they enter the premises. Ryan discovers a trap door that leads down to a basement. He and Mike find a room full of ears hung from the ceiling with string. Mike discovers a man tied in a closet with his brain exposed. Eww.
Mendez, up on the first floor, is attacked by a man who runs to his car, but is taken down by Ryan before he can escape. The man is Eldon Wyck, the man they’re looking for in connection to their investigation. Ryan barters with the man to get his help in the form of a USB drive.
They match his online signature (insert techy mumbo jumbo here) to an account that accessed the email account of the man that Theo killed the night before. They have attached their killer to this fake murder-suicide and are on their way to Maryland to investigate.
Max cruises through some facebook profiles and discovers a picture of their man with his wife. His face isn’t visible, but hers is, and they start running facial recognition on her.
Theo gets a ping on his phone that the FBI has accessed his wife’s DMV records and he is visibly shaken by how close they are to identifying him. His wife and kids, who were about to leave for the evening, are stopped on the stairs by a terrifying Theo. He injects his wife with something, and she passes out.
Ryan and Gina arrive to the Noble’s house to discover Mrs. Noble dead on the bed with her wrists cut. Ryan immediately goes to check on the kids who are drugged, but still alive in a nearby room.
After that scene, Gina can’t take anymore. She hands Ryan her badge and walks away from the FBI.
The episode ends after Ryan gets a call from Theo, and Theo promises that Ryan hasn’t seen anything yet.
