The Flash‘s upcoming time travel episode will pay homage to numerous time travel movies, previews executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.
We previously reported that The Flash would be introducing time travel later this season, and now we’re finding out a bit more about the episode.
What leads to Barry’s first trip through time? Kreisberg calls it an “inadvertent connection to the Speed Force,” which Harrison Wells first mentioned at the end of “The Sound and the Fury,” “that results in probably our funniest hour as well as our darkest hour as the dangers of time travel come to light.”
Kreisberg describes the episode as “a mashup between Back to the Future and Terminator,” two movies he calls “the good version of time travel and the bad version of time travel” respectively. He also warns that introducing time travel will have “massive repercussions” as “things are never going to be the same on The Flash” after this.
Series star Grant Gustin says the episode has “a Groundhog’s Day-type element,” in reference to the 1993 film in which Bill Murray plays a weatherman who relives the same day over and over again. “It’s really confusing because now we’re playing with timelines and we’re having to shoot things a couple different ways.”
Gustin explains that Barry’s “not handling [time travel] incredibly well” at first, since he doesn’t realize what’s going on. But once he figures it out, Barry recognizes the opportunity to change the tragedy in his past.
“He doesn’t know yet to maybe not do that,” Gustin teases, “but that’s where Barry’s at when he realizes what he’s just learned that he can do, that he can maybe save his mom.”
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
