There was a definite turning point in tonight’s episode. We saw the load that Barry’s been shouldering his entire life get a little bit lighter, but not before we saw how heavy his heart had become after what happened on that fateful day a year before. Check out all the details on what Barry and Co accomplished in the season 2 premiere of The Flash.
Depressed Barry
We are not fans of the Barry Allen one man band that was going on at the start of this episode. He was trying so hard to protect Central City entirely alone, we just knew that something terrible must have happened on the day the singularity wreaked its havoc.
We were happy to see that Cisco has moved his considerable talents to working for the police as a technical advisor. If he can’t be Barry’s right hand man, we are glad to see that he and Joe can get along. He is working with Joe to better equip the cops to deal with the metahuman threats that routinely affect Central City. We also learn that Caitlin has started working for Mercury Labs in the wake of the singularity.
Watching the beginning of the episode, it’s clear that something has Barry spooked. He doesn’t want to work with a team anymore, he doesn’t want recognition for saving the city, and he’s secretly rebuilding destroyed businesses in his spare time. He feels responsible for whatever happened with the singularity and we are dying to find out what it is he feels so guilty about.
The day of the singularity
We then, FINALLY, get to see how Barry and Co. stopped the singularity. In the flashback, while Barry raced around inside it to contain it’s power, Ronnie and Dr. Stein used their abilities as Firestorm to separate the event horizons permanently, destroying the black hole. Barry was able to pluck Dr. Stein out of the air and bring him safely to Earth, but Ronnie has been lost. Nobody saw what happened to Ronnie, but he’s gone as far as everyone present is concerned.
Everybody say, “Flash Day”!
Back in the present, Central City throws a celebration called Flash Day to commemorate the anniversary of the day Barry saved the city. We think that everyday should be Flash Day. Think about it! Imagine the lightning shaped foods and all the speed puns! Anyway, everyone talks about the hope that the Flash represents to all of them. The mayor presents the key to the city to the Flash, only to be swept off by Barry moments later when a baddie tries to throw a large vehicle at the gathered crowd.
Stretchy Hulk not happy
This baddie has the ability to stretch and grow himself. Imagine stretch armstrong meets the Hulk, minus the green. The man behind the baddie mask? Well, he just so happens to look an awful lot like that body that Barry and Joe found dead at the nuclear plant. Talk about weird.
Speaking of weird, the baddie-of-the-week tale takes a time out for a lawyer-type to bring Barry a flash drive with a video from Wells that is only to be given to Barry. If the video is not watched, the property and everything that makes up STAR labs will go into receivership, but if Barry tunes in, he’ll become the owner. While stewing at his desk, he gets a notification of a security breach at STAR Labs, and rushes over to find Cisco, Iris, Joe, and Dr. Stein working together to bring down the Atom-Smasher (as named by Dr. Stein, whom Cisco embraces for thinking up such an AWESOME name).
Cisco locates the baddie at a radioactive waste storage facility, and Barry charges into the fight without his com system. He gets himself in some serious trouble before Dr. Stein has Cisco use the fire alarm to distract the baddie so Barry can escape. Barry gets away, but isn’t doing well, and he collapses on the floor of STAR Labs.
He wakes up with Joe at his bedside and they have another patented Joe/Barry heart to heart. It’s the proper amount of touching and badass, just the way we love them.
Surprise confession
Joe talks some sense into Barry, and our Mr. Allen has finally decided to go start repairing some of the emotional damage that he has been avoiding since that day. He goes to talk to Caitlin, and while doing so the flash drive falls out of his wallet. Caitlin suggests they watch together. Harrison Wells ugly mug pops up on screen and talks a lot. Then he gets down to the nitty gritty. He tells Barry to delete everything before a certain point and he looks straight into the camera and admits to murdering Nora Allen. Barry’s faces explodes into a smile he can’t control. This is what he needs to free his father forever.
Joe makes some phone calls to the D.A. and such to be sure that the confession will hold up in court, and all signs point to yes. Barry’s dad will be coming home. Barry, back to feeling a bit like his old self again, then asks for help from all those that have stuck by his side before.
And the “Run, Barry, run!” goes to…
We thought it was worthwhile to note that while Harrison Wells isn’t around to iterate the ever popular, “Run, Barry, run!” that he’s so famous for, Joe takes that honor into his hands and does a nice job with it.
Taking down the Atom-Smasher
Long story short, Barry lures Atom-smasher through Central City and into a nuclear reactor core where he isn’t able to absorb all the radiation that floods the room. Barry escapes before the radiation can affect him, and doesn’t re-enter until Cisco gets a safe read on the radiation levels. Barry gets a chance to ask Atom-Smasher why he wanted to kill the Flash, and the Atom-Smasher mutters that someone promised to take him home if he killed Barry. Someone named Zoom.
A free man
The ultimate high of the episode was definitely watching Henry Allen walk out of Iron Heights and into Barry’s arms. It was a far more touching sight than we could have ever imagined, especially when coupled with everyone welcoming them into the West home with cheers and glad tidings.
Because everything can’t be all wine and roses on The Flash, Barry starts making all kinds of plans with Henry. He starts talking about apartments and job opportunities and everything that goes along with being free. Henry then drops a bomb on Barry: he doesn’t believe that Barry will continue to do everything he’s been working toward if his dad is always around. Henry has decided to leave Central City. *tear*
A strange visitor
Barry is torn up about it, but when he goes to visit Joe at STAR labs and holds the key to the city in his hand, he instantly perks up. He jokes around with the crew about all the upgrades they’ve made to the surveillance and security to keep just anyone from wandering in when a strange shadowy figure enters the room. (Cisco’s “For real?!” uttered here is sheer brilliance) The stranger introduces himself; “My name is Jay Garrick, and your world is in danger.”
