Barry had to deal with more than just Captain Cold in the latest episode of The Flash.
Tinkering Around
The episode begins with Barry training against a drone that Cisco is running. He manages to beat the drone, but according to him it wasn’t fast enough, so he wants to keep trying. He’s going to be spending more time training so he can be faster than the Reverse Flash, so Cisco has been helping him train with a whole bunch of new drones (some with lasers).
The beginning of the episode isn’t the only time that Cisco gets to play around with weapons and toys. Later in the episode Cisco shows the police force a reinforced police shield that can withstand the cold gun that Snart has, and they’re all like “Whoaaaa.” When they go to use the shields against Snart, though, they’re surprised by the guy with the fire gun. So Cisco works on a new way to cancel out their guns. He discovers that they have to cross beams (fire + ice = nothing, apparently).
Keeping Cool
Meanwhile, Leonard Snart (aka Captain Cold) and a friend go to break into a car dealership to get the Flash’s attention, but Barry doesn’t show up so they leave to fight another day. But Barry does end up showing to the scene of the crime with Joe to investigate it and realizes that Snart was the perpetrator of the crime, meaning that it was a trap for the Flash.
Dr. Wells thinks that Barry should keep his attention towards getting faster, saying he can’t always be the one to fight the bad guys and that the Reverse Flash should take priority. Barry makes up his mind and decides to keep training. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s the best move because Snart goes after a painting worth 25 million dollars, in hopes of getting the Flash’s attention. The police show up to the scene and are able to take on Snart and his cold gun but then something they didn’t expect happens.
Snart’s friend, who was wielding a fire gun, aims it at the police squad and sends two of them to the hospital, helping him and Snart get away with the painting. Joe tells Barry he needs to be there the next time they show up, and Barry agrees.
The next step Snart takes is to kidnap Caitlin, and that definitely works to get Barry to them quicker than usual. Snart streams a video showing the entire city he has Caitlin and is looking for the Flash, which gets the entire city to realize that the Flash is indeed real. He shows up to the neighborhood that Snart tells him to go to and they start battling in front of the police force, where ultimately he ends up getting Snart and the other guy to cross beams and wins the battle, of course.
In the end, though, Snart and his friend get Snart’s sister to help them escape from their prison convoy. Who’s his sister? We’ll have to wait to find out.
Awkward Moments
Iris is still looking forward to moving in with Eddie, regardless of how Barry feels. Barry comes by to pick something up at their old house and Iris gives him an old backpack he used to have, still filled with things from his childhood and Iris leaves awkwardly. When Joe asks what’s up Barry tells him he told her about his feelings, and Joe is all “Whoa. Well..at least you told her.”
After all the events of the episode Barry helps Iris move and lets her know that he’s happy for her, regardless. They’re still best friends and they should keep it that way, and Iris smiles and is all “Aww, thanks Barry.” And things aren’t awkward anymore – for now.
Iris leaves and Barry chills with Joe, and they come to an agreement to have Barry move back in so he’s not having to flash in and out in front of his neighbors all the time.
F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M.
Caitlin gets Barry to help her figure out what “Firststorm” was – the clue that Ronnie left her. It turns out it’s actually an acronym and is spelled. F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M., about molecular fusion and changing the molecular makeup of things to turn them into completely different items. She goes to meet the guy who wrote the online paper about it, and he says he’s getting paranoid. Why? Because he says Professor Martin Stine (co-author of the paper) was having success with melting a concrete wall, but the university they worked with wouldn’t give them more funding. Stine went to find someone else to fund them but then disappeared, and then the next day the army confiscated all their work.
So what’s with this F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. business and what does Ronnie have to do with it? We’re going to have to wait to also find that out, too.
