Actors Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik shared their thoughts on Sheldon and Amy’s unexpected romantic milestone in The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 15.
Sheldon and Amy have been inching toward romance for several seasons now, but the pair took a definitive step forward in The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 15. “Shamy,” as they are fondly known, had their first real kiss in last week’s Valentine’s Day-centric episode.
Jim Parsons (Sheldon) shared his thoughts on the unexpectedly touching moment in an interview with CBS.
“When the relationship agreement was laid out, there were no parameters for a kiss,” Parsons says, reflecting that the kiss with Amy initially “came out of anger.”
Still, “the viewers, as well as me, were left to assume that he enjoyed it once he got there,” Parsons says. “Unexpectedly, unpremeditated, but once those lips landed together, he was like, ‘This is not bad.'”
“It’s undeniable that there’s been change, and there’s been growth,” he says of his character. “This is new territory.”
Meanwhile, Mayim Bialik (the “Amy” half of “Shamy”) wrote a post for Kveller.com about her experience playing out the kiss. Though the fourteen-hour shoot was draining for the cast, Bialik says that she and Parsons were all business for the couple’s most romantic moment yet.
“The way you saw the kiss happen, much like my tiara moment, is exactly the way Jim and I intended it to play,” the actress writes. Still, “I couldn’t picture what we look like kissing; I don’t know how often any of us can picture ourselves kissing, actually.”
Though Bialik usually avoids watching her own performance, she did catch a bit of the kissing scene when it was previewed to the studio audience. “I was startled that my internal acting process (for lack of a better word) has a physical representation that is so striking,” she writes. “Consciously, I have little notion of how I will physically represent things as an actor. When there is no physical action scripted or indicated, I simply act emotions and those emotions sometimes have a physical representation and just are.
“I don’t know if that makes sense,” Bialik muses, “but Actor Mayim representing Fictional Character Amy in such a physical way with this kiss is as touching to me as it is to you.”
Bialik is certainly right on the money with her feelings. The sweetly unexpected kiss in The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 15, is easily one of the most-beloved and emotional moments of the season so far.
