The whole geeky gang makes unexpected discoveries on The Big Bang Theory 9×12, “The Sales Call Sublimation.”
Happy talk
The major discovery of the episode is Leonard’s, though it happens at Penny’s instigation. When Dr. Gallo, a psychologist, refuses to see Penny for pharmaceutical pitches, Leonard agrees to make an appointment to clear the way.
But instead of just doing his wife a favor, Leonard winds up having a real session with Dr. Gallo, finally excavating his traumatic mommy issues under her skilled direction. It’s actually really great to see, not only because seriously Leonard deserves some validation where his mom is concerned, but also because The Big Bang Theory 9×12 actually presents psychiatry in a positive and empowering light.
Penny isn’t as impressed with Leonard’s newfound self-confidence, but she excitedly goes to her appointment in order to pitch new anti-anxiety medication to Dr. Gallo. The doctor isn’t impressed, however, and manages to cut to the heart of Penny’s own anxiety – that Leonard is using her bossiness as a substitute for his mother. (Sheldon comes up as well.)
The conversation might be a serious breach of confidentiality, but it’s also some of the smartest dialogue Penny’s has in ages, so we’ll take it.
Finders, keepers
Meanwhile, Stuart finally moves out of Howard and Bernadette’s house (on his own volition!) as they prepare to begin remodeling. The Wolowitzes are then appalled to realize that they actually miss having the overgrown manchild around!
We can’t help but wonder if this might be a prelude to Howard and Bernadette deciding to have a baby, but either way, it turns out they have no reason to feel empty-nested. Stuart is still creeping back into their house to watch them sleep.
Yikes.
And finally, Sheldon discovers a medium-sized asteroid while helping Raj in the lab. (It also appears that Sheldon has synesthesia – who knew?) The two scientists agree to combine their names, and then their girlfriend’s names to name the space rock, but Sheldon’s classic selfishness once again becomes the center of conversation.
The asteroid is eventually named “Amy,” — but again, typically, it will probably be Amy who bears the brunt of this small victory.
