A platonic date ended on a shocking note for Sheldon and Amy, and Leonard wore lingerie on The Big Bang Theory 9×09.
Better where it’s wetter
The emotional center of “The Platonic Permutation” lies in Sheldon and Amy’s definitely-not-dating Thanksgiving trip to the aquarium. On the way, Sheldon grills Amy about her dating experiences since their breakup; she answers like a champ, and only asks Sheldon if he is doing okay.
Because she’s a sweetheart.
But chatting with the eternally clueless Sheldon about fish turns out to inspire a change of heart in Amy. She calls him before Thanksgiving dinner and offers to be his girlfriend again.
“Amy, I excel at many things. But getting over you wasn’t one of them,” Sheldon says. “I think I just need to be your friend.”
This is easily the most mature thing Sheldon has done since the breakup; unfortunately, it doesn’t make that much sense. Sheldon hasn’t stopped talking about, thinking about, or seeking out Amy over the entire season of The Big Bang Theory. He has been rude, mean, and disrespectful, and one nice afternoon doesn’t remedy all of the problems that plagued “Shamy”‘s relationship for so long.
But Amy doesn’t seem to remember or care about this. Unlike Sheldon, she respects his decision and tearfully says goodbye.
Carrot and stick
Meanwhile, cosmic justice fails again when Howard is dragged to the homeless shelter to help out on Thanksgiving. Howard whines about the entire affair — which is fine, not everybody needs to be a good Samaritan, but shut up or go home already — and makes even more racist jokes about Raj than usual. (Dear writers, it’s 2015, please stop this.)
Then he gets to meet tech idol Elon Musk while washing dishes. Musk is delighted to be helping out at the shelter, and all too happy to give Howard his email for potential job opportunities because that would definitely happen.
Finally, Leonard accidentally reveals that he has read Penny’s diary. His attempts to make this up to her are in vain until he puts on a terrible piece of lingerie he bought her and… sort of gyrates in it.
It’s disturbing and humiliating, and the entire gang walks in on him doing it. So justice wasn’t completely asleep at the wheel this week.
