The newest trailer for Terminator: Genisys gives us a glimpse at some of the key changes from past Terminator movies.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the Terminator, teaming up with Sarah Connor to save her son John. But, as this new trailer for Terminator: Genisys proves, much has changed about the world we know.
For one, there’s John Connor (played by Jason Clarke), whose allegiances seem to have shifted, causing an interesting change in dynamics.
But don’t take our word for it. Have a look at this brand new, exposition-heavy trailer:
The trailer is narrated by Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), who explains, “My whole life I’ve prepared my son to lead humanity in the fight against the machines.” We see John, a scarred soldier gearing up his army for battle.
“But there was one thing I could never prepare him for,” Sarah continues. John explains how the Terminator (Schwarzenegger, looking like they’ve cut him straight out of past Terminator movies — which they probably have!) has been sent back in time to kill Sarah, and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) offers to go back and save her. So far, so good.
But this time it’s not Kyle having to save Sarah… it’s the other way around. It seems Sarah’s knowledge of the future has led her to become a fighter herself, and she’s been working with the aged Terminator for over a decade to prepare for the fight against the future. Time loops, man. Complicated stuff.

When the aged Terminator actually appears to kill John, he rises again. “Survival was what you taught me,” he tells Sarah – and now, it seems John Connor (or whatever he’s turned into) has become the enemy. It all culminates in a Terminator vs Terminator showdown, in a truly spectacular feat of movie manipulation.
No sign of Matt Smith in this trailer, which was all about the Connor clan and their relationship with the aged Terminator. But if you’re curious about his role, you can read more in this spoilery report.
