Terminator 2 is no longer coming in 2017, making Paramount’s planned trilogy unlikely.
Some movie franchise revivals from 2015 will go down in history — Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens were both smash hit successes — others, not so much.
Terminator: Genisys was meant to revive the Terminator franchise, and kickstart a new trilogy of movies. The second movie was scheduled for release on May 19, 2017, with the third film slated for June 29, 2018.

But after the reboot’s lacklustre performance last summer, Paramount has adjusted its schedule, swapping out Terminator 2 for Dwayne Johnson’s Baywatch.
Baywatch, also a reboot, stars Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrback. The movie version of the iconic 1990s TV show is directed by Seth Gordon.
Terminator: Genisys was directed by Alan Taylor, and starred Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney. It was neither a hit with critics nor fans, and scored a scathing 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.
There were high hopes for this reboot, which brought Schwarzenegger back to his most iconic role, and gave Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke a chance to shine on the big screen. But, although a sequel is not impossible, Paramount is quickly running out of time — as Variety notes, their copyright expires in 2019, after which ownership will pass back to creator James Cameron.
