The BBC’s Teletubbies reboot is building up quite a cast as Jim Broadbent joins Fearne Cotton, Jane Horrocks and more.
Acclaimed Academy Award-winning British thespian Jim Broadbent has landed a new gig: a talking trumpet.
The BBC is bringing back their hit children’s series Teletubbies after a 14-year hiatus, revamping the show and adding a host of celebrities. They are probably hoping the added star power will entice toddlers the world over to tune in. Or something.
While the show will still center on the four brightly colored Ninja Turtles Teletubbies Laa-Laa, Dipsy, Po and Tinky Winky, Broadbent’s talking trumpet will be a regular character.
Broadbent said in a statement, “Teletubbies is truly a British institution and it’s very exciting to be involved in bringing this global hit back to our TV screens. I’m really looking forward to working with the Teletubbies and giving them big hugs.”
Over 1 billion children from more than 120 countries have reportedly watched the educational show, which was famed for its rolling hills, laughing sun baby and repetitive video clips (at least that’s what this writer remembers from her childhood).
The Teletubbies reboot will premiere on the children’s channel CBeebies later this year.
We can’t wait to see if The BBC will bring back the show in its original format (a painted background and fluffy body suits for the actors), or if they’ll take advantage of modern technology to make the world of the Teletubbies look more realistic. We kind of hope they don’t, because let’s face it, the technicolor gigglefest is already creepy enough as it is.
Broadbent’s talking trumpet may or may not look something like this:
