This week on Teen Wolf season 6, episode 4, “Relics,” the pack tries to find something that Stiles left behind in order to prove he was real.
Melissa joined the hunt on this week’s Teen Wolf episode, and it was nice to see her outside the hospital for a change. She’s tired of seeing people she cares about being wheeled into the ER, but she’s not very good at the whole being quiet part. Good thing Chris is there to patiently guide her.
The duo come across a pair of victims in the woods, and then Chris spots Malia through the scope of his rifle. The blood has drawn her to the fresh kill, so Chris wings her to protect themselves. We’re once again revisiting the idea that Malia needs Stiles to stay in control of her bloodlust.
Meanwhile, Mason’s research into the Ghost Riders is starting to pay off in a big way. He notices the point of impact from a lightning strike on the ceiling of Melissa’s living room and guesses that the Riders rode the lightning in order to get into the house during the party.
At the library, he and Liam are doing research on lightning in a scene very reminiscent of the early Scott and Stiles relationship. Liam is mostly confused, but Mason finds a way to relate the information to him in a manner he can understand.
Basically, Beacon Hills currently has five times more lightning strikes per storm than the average. Mason realizes they can watch the K-Index for a storm to see if the Ghost Riders are on their way. As the numbers rise and the pack scrambles to prepare for another attack, they move those who saw the Ghost Rider in the last episode to Argent’s underground bunker, where they can be safe from the lightning.
It’s up to Lydia to look for a relic from Stiles — a piece of evidence that proves he existed. Maybe it can bring him back.
She goes to Sheriff Stilinski to get permission to search his house. At first he doesn’t understand why she would think she’d find something there, but then he recalls stubbing his toe on a bat and automatically yelling, “Stiles.” Clearly there are some memories buried deep within his mind.
At the sheriff’s house, Lydia sees a man who yells to her, “You didn’t see it, did you?” “See what?” she asks. “It’s right in front of your face,” he says before disappearing. Lydia begins to peel the wallpaper from what I assume used to be Stiles’ room, but Claudia forcibly stops her. The woman is completely unsympathetic to Lydia’s excuses.
Returning to the bunker, I have to say I really appreciated the exchange between Chris and Malia in this episode, particularly because of the throwback to Kate. Although she was a hunter, and therefore human, Kate still had a bloodlust. Chris never intervened when it came to his sister, but if he had, maybe she wouldn’t be the monster she is today. That’s why he wants to help Malia, and it was a beautiful moment to see them bonding like that.
The lacrosse players don’t want to give up their game, though, so in order to keep them safe, Scott, Corey, and Liam meet them on the field. The Wild Hunt is affecting everyone, and it isn’t long before the storm starts and the Riders come in on their horses.
Those that can see the Riders start running every which way, but a single bullet is all that it takes to make them disappear into a burst of green light and smoke. Mason realizes the Rider from last week was afraid of Parrish, so they call the Hellhound in as backup. Interestingly, when Parrish is shot, he doesn’t disappear, but his fire goes out. Was he just stunned, or did he lose his powers?
In the end, it doesn’t matter. Scott has seen the Riders now, and everyone from the party, except for the pack members, have been taken. When Nathan escapes from the bunker, he inadvertently lets the Ghost Riders in, and he, along with everyone else down there, is also taken.
Malia and Chris see the Ghost Riders, but they are also not taken. Is it because they’re too big of a threat? Chris is seriously injured and taken to the hospital (did you see the way he and Melissa hold hands!?), and Scott looks defeated. He admits that Liam’s idea to use a lightning rod to attract the Riders and then fight them would’ve been better. Now all the people he promised to protect are gone.
Lydia isn’t doing much better on her mission. She doesn’t trust Claudia, and for once her mother is being supportive by offering to listen to everything she knows and being the unbiased perspective. I’m disappointed we didn’t get to see more of this discussion, but considering it would’ve been a repeat of what we already know, that’s probably for the best.
Lydia and her mother go to Melissa for Claudia’s medical records, and they see that she never had any children. However, the records do show she had frontotemporal dementia. Melissa points out how strange this is, so here’s to hoping they’ll keep looking into Claudia and find out she actually doesn’t belong in their world.
One person who’s having a fairly good day, all things considered, is Liam, who’s been made captain of the lacrosse team because he refused to leave the field during the game — unlike most of the other students. Coach is being particularly obtuse here, but it serves the story well. Liam is becoming a leader, and as such, he’s got a plan. He wants to catch one of the Ghost Riders.
Lydia doesn’t want to give up on finding Stiles, but Malia says they have to fight the Ghost Riders, not look for someone who may never have existed in the first place. She remarks that Stiles doesn’t seem to have left anything behind, but Lydia mentions that he left them behind. They’re not the relics the pack should be looking for, but the sentiment is beautiful all the same.
No, the relic is Roscoe, the Jeep. We see it as Liam, Mason, Corey, and Hayden have a slow-mo walk through the parking lot, confident in their leader, in their connection as a team, and in their plan to catch a Rider. I don’t know how confident I am in the latter point, but I like that this group looks like Teen Wolf: The Next Generation.
If Teen Wolf wasn’t ending this season, I would’ve bet money this group would be headlining season 7.
