Taylor Swift made her breakup official in “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” but she sees the positive side of love in her new single, “Begin Again.”
Swift previewed the track on Good Morning America Monday and officially released the new song Tuesday. She will preview three more songs on ABC’s morning show each Monday leading up to the release of Red.
As the second single off her upcoming fourth studio album, Red, “Begin Again” has already topped iTunes, passing Psy’s K-Pop sensation “Gangnam Style.”
The track is more of a ballad than “WANEGBT” is, but don’t let the slow tempo confuse you. Although there’s reference to a bad breakup, the song celebrates meeting someone new.
“It’s actually a song about kind of when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date after a horrible breakup and the vulnerability that goes along with all of that,” she told Good Morning America before previewing the song.
She opens “Begin Again” with:
“Take a deep breath in the mirror. He didn’t like it when I wore high heels, but I do. Turn the lock and put my headphones on. He always said he didn’t get this song but I do, I do. Walked in expecting you’d be late, but you got here early and you stand and wait. I walk to you. You pulled my chair out and helped me in, and you don’t know how nice that is but I do,” she sings comparing her ex with a first date.
It’s all well and good until she hits the chorus and gets us shedding tears of hurt and joy at the same time.
“I think it’s strange you think I’m funny ’cause he never did,” she sings. “I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break, burn and end. But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again.”
Red, the follow-up to 2010’s Speak Now, drops Oct. 22
Speak Now won the 2011 American Music Award for Favorite Country Album and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart.
