Neil Blomkamp set the movie industry alight back in 2009 with the hugely successful District 9. The official synopsis for his second feature Elysium has been revealed, giving us plenty of information about the sci-fi genre and political undertones.
District 9 was particularly heralded by both critics and box-office for excellent effects work and the creative ways it dealt with the themes of racism and oppression. Ever since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating Blomkamp’s follow-up to the movie. However, plot details have been kept incredibly close to the film-makers chest. In fact, up until this point we only really knew that Elysium would feature a star-studded cast including Matt Damon and Jodie Foster and (like its predecessor) would deal with sensitive political issues in a science fiction setting. Finally, the wait is over!
Collider revealed the first plot synopsis for the movie, which was sent out with invites to private screenings.
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Elysium will be released on March 1, 2013.
