Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver teases season 10. As a bonus, The CW has also released a retrospective video.
When the new season picks up, Sam will be competing with a new character to find Dean, Carver tells EW. While Sam is hunting down Dean to save — or cure — him, “you’ve [also] got this character of Cole, who is hunting down Dean for entirely different reasons.” Cole will “cause all kinds of complications,” though he will also “evolve from how we see him to something very different once he finally does come face-to-face with Dean.”
In his search for his brother, “Sam finds himself in something of the position of protector. That’s a bit of the flip for the boys,” Carver explains. “It’s something that Sam takes very seriously coming into this season while also having to deal with some of the things he did, which are morally questionable, while on the hunt for Dean.”
Meanwhile, the writers haven’t forgotten that Sam has the know-how to cure a demon after season 8. However, the Mark of Cain is going to complicate matters, according to Carver. “It’s still around, and it’s very much a question for the first run of episodes if it still has an effect on Dean or not.”
But beyond that, the Mark will be “very much on the boys’ minds as they plot out a game plan for the next batch of episodes after Dean is healed. In other words, the boys are very much focused on healing their relationship and healing one another.”
And then there is Castiel, who will be more interested in helping Dean than curing his own failing grace. However, he won’t be working with Sam. But Carver says there are reasons for this. “One has to do with Castiel not wanting to be a distraction with his own issue, and then there’s another reason which we learn during the episode.”
Meanwhile, The CW has released a two-minute Supernatural video that looks back at the first nine seasons. Watch the Facebook exclusive video below:
The video opens with a look back at the pilot when John Winchester witnessed his wife, Mary, burn alive on the ceiling above an infant Sam’s crib. We then see clips, including many iconic lines, from the first nine seasons of the show in anticipation of season 10 and episode 200.
Supernatural season 10 premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
