Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver teases characters from the Winchesters’ past returning in season 11.
At Comic-Con, Carver teased that some characters from the brothers’ past would be coming back in “surprising ways,” though he wouldn’t elaborate. While he’s still not telling us just who might be returning, he does share a bit more about the context of these characters’ return.

“As responsible as the boys feel for having released The Darkness and how much they personally want to defeat it, they’re not going to be able to do it alone,” Carver says.
“They’re going to have to confront some figures from their past. They’re going to have to make some unexpected and unholy alliances involving folks from their past, which will have personal ramifications, as well. Because these are some pretty significant figures from their past.”
That sounds ominous — and more related to villains from their past than friendly faces.

With the descriptions of The Darkness we’ve gotten so far, we can’t help but be reminded of The First from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and wonder if it will take the forms of dead characters (of which there are plenty to choose from!). Either way, there is still plenty left to reveal once the season starts.
The Darkness is “interesting because it’s not really a monster,” Jensen Ackles says. “It’s more of a primal force that we know nothing about. There’s no lore; there’s no guidebook; there’s no instruction manual on how to deal with this.”
Supernatural season 11 premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
