In Supernatural season 11, episode 2, “Form and Void,” Sam had some sort of vision. But what was its source?
In “Form and Void,” Sam was suffering with a mysterious, Darkness-induced infection that was slowly killing him. After meeting with Billie, a reaper, who told him that when he and Dean die next, they will be thrown into Empty, aka the void of the episode title, he went into the chapel to pray for hope. Not long after, Sam collapsed with a vision of him being tortured, which we assume is a memory of his time in the Cage.
So, where did it come from? There are a few possibilities.
God
The most obvious answer is that Sam’s vision was some kind of message from God. After all, Sam had just prayed for a sign before he collapsed. Sam seemed to think the source was God, as he asked what it meant while looking skyward.
However, it’s unclear how a vision of torture could be a sign of hope. Another strike in the God category is the fact that God is MIA. While a popular fan theory is that Chuck is God and we did see him in season 10, he’s not exactly acting, well, God-like.
Lucifer
On the opposite end of the spectrum, perhaps Sam’s vision came from Lucifer. After all, Sam is still Lucifer’s vessel, and we even got a mention of Michael and Lucifer crying out from the Cage in the previous episode. That doesn’t seem incidental. We also know that all angels hear prayers, so could Lucifer have heard Sam’s prayer and sent him the vision? If it was him, though, there’s no telling what his motivation would have been.
Lucifer is also known as the “Light Bearer,” which would make sense in conflict with The Darkness. And it took God and the archangels, of which Lucifer is one, to lock The Darkness away so his connection to the present-day story arc would be logical.
The Darkness
Another potential source is The Darkness itself. Sam, at the time of the vision, was infected by The Darkness. The vision, perhaps, was an attempt to stop Sam from trying to cure himself — after all, what could be more intimidating than the type of vision that Sam received? Furthermore, there was a voice warning Sam not to go through with the cleansing, which could have been The Darkness trying to protect itself.
In the previous episode, Dean explained seeing adult Amara to Sam and eventually admitted that the whole thing could have been a vision, meaning he believes The Darkness has the capacity to send visions.
Another source
Of course, there is the possibility that none of these sources sent Sam the vision. It would undoubtedly take a powerful entity to send a vision, and the Supernatural world is not short of those.
Supernatural season 11 airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
