Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has finally spoken out about the film in his first official interview.
There’s been loads of mystery about how Luke Skywalker would be included in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it came out that he’s under a massively complex non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that prevents him from talking specifics to keep the mystery alive.
So far we’ve only seen his metallic hand in one of the film’s trailers, and that’s about it. In his first interview with Famous Monsters of Filmland, Hamill says, “The new storyline, the new characters, and especially the actors that they chose to play them, are thrilling beyond words.”
It’s exciting to find out that the actor who played Luke back in 1977 thinks the new characters are “thrilling beyond words.” He most likely is unable to explain what he means by that, but the young actors that have joined the film seem like perfect casting for the new age of Star Wars.
When discussing the film’s concept, Hamill says it’s all about setting up the next generation of heroes and villains, but says, “The fact that half a dozen cast members from the originals can be there to place it in some sort of context, to be there for the historical side of things, I think it’s wonderful. … Young people can see the progression of the characters. I’m old enough to be Luke’s grandfather now, and that’s a healthy, natural thing for people to see.”
It is pretty amazing that J.J. Abrams was able to create a new story that includes so many of the old characters, and should bring so many generations of Star Wars fans together as they all will have new and old characters to relate to in The Force Awakens.
He then spoke about being the same age as Alec Guinness when he played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original films. He says, “Intellectually, I know I’m the same age as Alec Guinness. Emotionally, I’m thinking, “Are you kidding me?!? I still like The Three Stooges and the Rolling Stones. How could I be old?”
While Hamill says we will recognize a lot from the previous films, The Force Awakens is entirely different and says he thinks the film could be every bit as exciting for the audience, “but it’s not going to be like it was then, where we’re rattling around in the Death Star, and exchanging quips, and jockeying for the affections of the princess. It’s going to be age appropriate. The story has moved on, and our purposes in the story is different than it was then.”
While he doesn’t reveal anything specific about the film’s storyline, the fact that he says the story has moved on is interesting. It seems director J.J. Abrams didn’t want to get stuck in the past, and we hope the new film is just as revolutionary as the original.
