Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are parting ways with Lucasfilm, leaving the film with production nearly wrapped.
The Han Solo film has been in production since February, with little to suggest any clash of visions on the set. But Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced today that Lord and Miller will leave the Star Wars Story project due to “different creative visions.”
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew,” Kennedy’s statement says. “But it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.”
Lord and Miller, who made a name for their quirky ethos with films like 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie, offered a similar (and similarly discrete) statement.
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project,” the pair say. “We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”
Adding to the mystery, sources say that the untitled Han Solo film has only three weeks of principal photography left to complete. While the Han Solo directors’ departure could be the result of uncomplicated creative disagreements, it certainly seems a strange and sudden time to part ways from the film.
Contingent on no other surprises, Alden Ehrenreich will star as Han Solo. Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, and Thandie Newton will also star.
The film’s release date remains unchanged, and is due on May 25, 2018.
