Star Trek 3 will be heading in a new direction after the departure of Roberto Orci as director.
Deadline is reporting that Roberto Orci will no longer be the director of Star Trek 3, but he will stay on as a producer. The report does not say whose decision it was to have Orci leave, but more than likely it was the decision of Paramount, as Orci would have little reason to depart the project. However, his decision to stay on as a producer might point to it being his decision.
To date, Orci has never directed a film. He has had a successful screenwriting career with former writing partner Alex Kurtzman before they recently decided to pursue individual film projects. They remain partners on TV projects. Together they wrote Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the latter with Damon Lindelof.
The report claims that Paramount already has a shortlist of directors they would like to see take over Star Trek 3, and the shortlist reportedly includes Edgar Wright, among others.
It is not currently known whether Wright would have any interest in directing Star Trek 3. He famously had a bad blockbuster experience with Ant-Man, and it’d be hard to see him taking over this project where he likely wouldn’t have complete creative control. The universe is already set up, and it’d be hard to see Wright playing in that universe.
It’s not yet known if Star Trek 3 will experience a delay after Orci’s departure, and if it does, we wonder if Paramount would consider waiting for J.J. Abrams to be able to return. He’ll likely be done with the Star Wars universe after he completes The Force Awakens, and a return to Star Trek 3 would give Paramount a sure thing.
We don’t know much about where Star Trek 3 was headed before Orci’s departure, only that he was working on a script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. There had been rumors that the film would take the Enterprise crew more into deep space than the first two films (think Star Trek: The Original Series) and that William Shatner might have a role in the film.
“My sources tell me that the script Orci was working on saw the Enterprise, the Vulcans, and a new alien race competing to get a time travel device,” Badass Digest says of Orci’s film. “The Vulcans want to go back and stop the destruction of their planet, and the time travel schtick is what would allow Chris Pine and William Shatner to share the screen.”
It’s probable that the script will undergo changes under a new director, particularly if Edgar Wright were to come aboard. If the description above is accurate, that’s a major blessing.
