The PS4 release date is finally upon us. As such, what better time to reflect how Sony’s next-gen console came into being?
Announced to the world in February via an online press conference, Sony’s PS4 made immediately caused a big commotion.
The PS4 was to feature a DualShock 4 controller, complete with a TouchPad and “share” button on the front. Read more about the features of the DualShock 4 controller on Sony’s website.
The console itself was to look like a lopsided equals sign. See more specifications for the PS4 console from the official Sony website below.
In speaking of the newly announced console, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House said “PS4 is a shift from a console… it will unleash imaginations.”
Lead system architect for the PS4 Mark Cerny came on stage to speak of the new features of the PS4. “Consoles are no longer a single purpose device,” said Cerny.

Cerny went on to compare the PS4 to a supercharged PC. He was correct in that statement, for the following were the amazing new features for the PS4:
-Games are available to play as they are downloading.
-You can share live game videos of what friends are playing.
-You can also take over the controller for a friend who’s far away through the internet.
-As the PS4 discovers your likes and dislikes, it will provide pre-loaded content online for you to check out.
Sony has also recently released a launch trailer containing an array of clips from many of the games that will be coming to its console over the next year, including Infamous, Watch Dogs and Knack.
In August of the same year at Gamescom 2013, the PS4 release date was announced as being November 15 in North America, and November 29 in Europe.
It was also confirmed that the PS4 would retail for £349 / €399 / $399.
In July, some major retailers, such as Amazon and Gamestop, halted pre-orders for both the PS4 and Xbox One due to an over-demand.
Later in July, Sony told Hypable that “over 100” PS4 games were going to be made available within the first year of the console’s launch.
