The top 20 contestants will take the So You Think You Can Dance stage with new partners this week, as they try to win America’s votes and avoid elimination.
The top 20 showed us their best last week, dancing a routine in their style, with a partner in the same style. This week, however, the partners will be switched up between styles, and will dance a routine that is not necessarily their style. This is always an exciting time, because it’s amazing to see how well two different dancers from two different backgrounds are able to work together to create something beautiful. It’s also interesting to see how well some dancers perform in styles completely different from their own.
Unfortunately, it won’t be all happiness tonight. We will also see our first eliminations of season 11, as one guy and one girl will be sent home, just as the fun has begun. Based on votes cast after the first night of performances last week, we will find out which performers earned the lowest number of votes. SYTYCD still doesn’t have a separate results episode, like they used to, which is incredibly frustrating to all the fans. But if they stick to last season’s elimination format, all the contestants will be able to dance one more time for America, before two find out they are going home.
Cat revealed last week that in addition to a cash prize, a magazine cover, and the title of America’s Favorite Dancer, season 11’s winner will also be offered a role in this fall’s Broadway revival of On The Town. In celebration of this, On The Town‘s choreographer Josh Bergasse will be choreographing a routine to the opening number, “New York, New York,” for the top 20 to kick off tonight’s show.
On top of everything else, today is executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe’s 65th birthday! Hopefully the top 20 contestants will shower him with the gift of many many gorgeous routines.
