Liza Minnelli makes her entrance and performs a song with Tom in two new pictures from the upcoming season of Smash.
As NBC announced in November, the iconic performer will have a cameo during episode 10 of the upcoming second season of the Grammy and Golden Globe-nominated musical drama. She will sing an original song, written by Smash Producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, with Bombshell co-creator Tom Levitt (Christian Borle).
Entertainment Weekly got an early look at Minnelli’s stint on Smash with two new photographs – one showing Minnelli singing as Tom plays the piano.
“This [Broadway] community is so small that a Tom would know Liza Minnelli personally,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt told EW. “It’s an episode where Tom is trying to make it up to Ivy (Megan Hilty) because they’ve had a bit of a falling out. He takes her to a restaurant because it’s her birthday and as a peace-offering, he presents Liza Minnelli to sing a song that he wrote. And Christian and Liza sing it together.”
Other guest stars booked for Smash‘s sophomore season include Jennifer Hudson, Sean Hayes, Nikki Blonksy, Jesse L. Martin and Daphne Rubin-Vega.
Smash returns to NBC Feb. 5 at 9 p.m. EST with a two-hour season premiere and moves to Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST for the rest of the season. Catch up on the series with the Smash Season 1 DVD out Jan. 8. Keep an eye on Hypable for the DVD review and the opportunity to win a free copy.
