Sleepy Hollow returned to its third season tonight and this episode proved once again why we fell in love with it.
I’m not one to skirt around the truth – the past season and a half of Sleepy Hollow has not been, shall I say, ideal to say the least. With characters left underdeveloped and overly complicated plots, it seemed that the mythology might have gotten diluted.
But with tonight’s episode, my belief in the show has been revived, much like Pandora’s ex-now-current-boyfriend. Despite Abbie Mills being gone for 98% of the episode, I found that seeing Ichabod, Jenny and Joe work so hard to get her back was almost just as rewarding and exciting as it used to be back in season 1 when they were figuring everything out for the first time.
Ichabod is still Ichabod, but with a twist
The thing I absolutely loved most about this episode was the fact that we got to see Ichabod ride a motorcycle! We’ve seen him drive before and we know he’s a quick study when it comes to technology, but there was just something unnervingly hot about seeing Ichabod take off that helmet at the beginning of the episode.
Hotness aside, though, it’s great that we’re seeing Ichabod learn more about the 21st century and just accepting it. I was kind of over his flabbergasted reactions and drawn out confused moments, but I still love it when it slips in at the right moment. His scene with his microwavable lasagna was just enough to remind us that this is not Ichabod’s fortè, but not long enough to remind us of all the other times the show has used the “new to technology” gag.
A new ally, at last
Sleepy Hollow has a tendency to introduce a ton of enemies, and given the episodic nature and creature-of-the-week dynamic that makes a lot of sense, but I’m so happy we finally have another person on our team.
Sophie Foster is a fantastic new addition to the team, and a smart choice on the show’s end. Not only will Sophie fill in the blank FBI agent spot left by Abbie in the group, she’s another non-believer who’s been forced to believe in this crazy end-of-the world nonsense.
It was absolutely entertaining watching her struggle with the concept of demons and other dimensions, but she wasn’t naive enough to make it annoying. Ichabod told her what’s up, she had her moment of disbelief, and as soon as he proved to her that it was real, she just accepted it. I’m not sure I could’ve handled another episode or two of her not believing the things the audience knows for a fact are real, at least in this show.
Intrigue, mystery and drama
And, of course, a TV drama wouldn’t be a drama if there wasn’t a twist! When we saw Pandora and her boyfriend back on screen, it was actually a little surprising and I was more than open to the idea of them still being there — especially since Pandora didn’t have her entire box to keep making demons appear.
But she did have a shard of it! Which, apparently for Pandora, is almost the same thing since she can draw power from the shard and call monsters to do her bidding — they just have to actually travel to Sleepy Hollow now instead of appearing inside it.
I’m absolutely fine with this arc now, especially considering they lost their powers/strength in the blast from the last episode, which should make battling them more interesting. I’m truly intrigued to see what Pandora is going to conjure up next.
Abbie Mills returns!
And I cannot finish a review of the Sleepy Hollow return without mentioning the ever-so-welcome return of Abbie Mills. See, I absolutely knew she wasn’t dead, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t happy she was here!
Seeing Abbie in wherever the hell she was just confirmed that this was going to be an intriguing second half of the season. I have so many questions about where she is, how she got there, how long she thinks she’s been there and how she’s going to get out, but I’m just going to wait another week and find out because I’m on the edge of my seat and it’s a feeling I’m so glad I have again.
