Fans of Japanese snacks and candies: Stop what you’re doing and check out the Japan Box from Skoshbox. It’s filled to the brim with so many authentic Japanese treats, you won’t believe your eyes.
(Warning: This post will include spoilers for the May Japan Box. If you’ve already ordered one and don’t want to be spoiled, avert your eyes!)
About The Japan Box
The Japan Box, the newest monthly subscription service from Skoshbox, is a high-end mystery box that’s full of Japanese snacks, sweets, and goodies. It’s the third and largest option in Skoshbox’s lineup of Japanese snack subscription boxes, with 12-14 treats as well as two mystery gifts included in every box.
What sets Skoshbox and the new Japan Box apart from similar subscription box services is their dedication to quality, authenticity, and celebration of the Japanese culture. Each item in the Japan Box is of the highest caliber, no fillers or cheap knockoffs allowed.
Another cool thing about the Japan Box (and even the other two Skoshbox subscription box offerings) is the fact that there are four different payment plans. Like most subscription box services, Japan Box offers a monthly renewal plan that’s priced at $35/month. In addition to the monthly plan, there’s also a three month plan ($100), six month plan ($195), and full year plan ($385), with the price coming out to be cheaper per box the more you prepay. The best part about the subscription, however, is that U.S. shipping is absolutely free, so the price you see is the price you pay.
The only drawback from the Japan Box service is that they currently do not yet ship internationally. The Japan Box ships only to the United States and U.S. Territories at this time, but hopefully that’ll change soon!
The Japan Box review
I’ll be honest. I’m really only a casual Japanese snack fan. My knowledge of Japanese treats doesn’t expand far beyond Hello Pandas and Koala Yummies. I’m just not very familiar with Japanese goodies. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot from my May Japan Box.
The Japan Box has so many different kinds of treats and goodies in so many bright colors that I was mesmerized when I first opened my box. But my enchantment soon turned into panic when I realized that I couldn’t read any of the labels. I had no idea what any of the treats actually were! Luckily, the Japan Box was one step ahead of me.
Included in every box is a little booklet that details all of the sweets and gifts included inside! Sure, the packaging gives a pretty good idea of what each snack is, but I’m so glad that Japan Box includes this pamphlet. That way, I know exactly what I’m tasting so that I can enjoy it for what it is. It’ll also come in handy for figuring out where to buy more packages of the treats I like the most from my box!
The May Japan Box offers a variety of Japanese snacks, from fruity candies to chocolate-filled biscuits to sweet potato chips. No two items are alike, which I really appreciate. I also love the fact that the items in the box are very unique in general. I can’t say that I’ve ever tried anything similar to most of the treats in my Japan Box. Every package I open is a whole new experience for me.
Unlike other mystery food boxes I’ve tried, I enjoyed every single item in my Japan Box. There wasn’t one snack or treat that I didn’t like, which is saying something. They’re all high-quality and incredibly addicting (in the best way possible). It’s easy to tell how much thought was put into the creation of the Japan Box because these are truly the best of the best treats.
That being said, I do have a few favorites. I’m absolutely in love with the Puccho hard gummies. The container is full of lemon and cola-flavored pieces that I can’t stop eating. They’re that good. I also really enjoy the orange fettuccine gummies and Dole grape gummies. I have a weakness for fruity gummy candies and these really hit the spot. They’re super flavorful without being overly sweet. I wish I had a few more packages of each!
The Japan Box also tucks a few fun (inedible) gifts into every box. In the May box, I was delighted to find a cute pair of pencils that look like a set of chopsticks, a large squishy charm shaped like a taiyaki cake, and, my personal favorite, a mystery Sumikko Gurashi sushi toy. Each one of these items has such a personality and charm to it. They don’t feel like they’re just thrown in as filler. Plus, they’re items that I’ll actually use, so that’s definitely a bonus!
Curious about what else was included in the May Japan Box? Here’s a list!
- Gudetama gum
- Lifeguard drink candy
- Umaibo: Takoyaki (which is a puffed corn stick)
- Fettuccine gummies
- Peko x Sanrio Ichigo Choco
- Pie-No-Mi chocolate
- Ume Soft Candy
- Chip Star: Sweet Potato
- Puccho hard gummies
- Dole grape gummies
- Kuchidoke porinki chips
- Wooden Hashi pencil set
- Taiyaki squishy
- Sumikko Gurashi blind item
Without Japan Box, I probably never would’ve tried most of these Japanese candies and snacks. I never would’ve known that they existed nor that I was missing out on them. I love the fact that, through one single box, I was able to try a wide variety of treats and experience a culture I’m not all that familiar with.
Whether you’re already a fan of Japanese snacks and sweets or you need a bit of convincing, you should definitely check out the Japan Box by Skoshbox. It’s a great value for such high-quality, authentic items, not to mention ones as tasty as these. Plus, the packages are all small enough for the box to include a wide variety of samples, but not too small where it feels like you’re not getting enough of each snack. Out of all of the food boxes I’ve ever seen or experienced, Japan Box is definitely one of the best.
