Simon Pegg has accepted his mission to return to the role of gadget expert Benji Dunn in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 5.
Tom Cruise is already set to return to this fifth iteration as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, as this will be Pegg’s third appearance in the franchise. In the last installment, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, we saw Benji Dunn thrown into the fray as part of the action, which was a first for the character. Pegg, who has done his own action in films before and since, most recently did quite a lot of stunts in the sci-fi action-comedy The World’s End earlier this year.
Pegg confirmed the news to MTV, saying in his typical joking manner, “Yes, absolutely [i’m returning]. I’m looking forward to that. I’ve already started eating one carrot a day in order to be in shape.” Joking aside, the fact he’s already physically preparing for the role suggests we can expect to see Benji Dunn back in the field, rather than just behind a computer.
With Pegg and Cruise set to reprise their respective characters, the next big question is whether Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner will return to round out the team seen in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. With a release date recently announced for Christmas Day 2015 (just one week after J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars – Episode VII), we’ll likely have an answer to that question sooner rather than later.
Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Tom Cruise in last year’s action flick Jack Reacher, will direct this latest installment based on a screenplay by Drew Pearce, who most recently penned Iron Man 3.
